Performing Arts
Students have loved exploring and developing their instrumental skills as part of our music focus this term in Performing Arts.
Foundation (Prep) have been exploring percussion in both our Weather Soundscapes and Percussive Zoo units. Students have been introduced to the rhythmic values 'Ta', 'Ti-ti' and 'Saa', using them to build four-beat rhythm patterns, and have experimented with body percussion and classroom instruments to capture different weather sounds. Inspired by the Prep excursion to Healesville Sanctuary, we've also been bringing native animal sounds to life through percussion! Students have been practising how to hold and play their instruments safely, and have done a fabulous job all term.
Grade 1 and 2 parents: you'll be excited to hear that recorders have made a comeback this second half of term! (Before you ask — yes, students will be able to take their recorders home to practise over the summer break!) We've been brushing up on technique and revisiting all the greatest hits, as well as exploring music through play with some brilliant rhythm-based games — the perfect way to start or finish our weekly sessions together. These students should be so proud of their perseverance this term — well done, Grade 1 and 2!
Grade 3 and 4 have had keyboards take over the Performing Arts room as part of their current song study, learning to play Adele's Rolling in the Deep across a range of instruments including keyboards, boomwhackers, chime bars and sound bellows (ask your child about these — they're a lot of fun to play!). Students have loved our music rotations, working independently and building confidence at their own level.
Grade 5 and 6 have been deep in a song study of Dance Monkey by Tones and I, learning the piece on keyboards and ukuleles. It's wonderful to see students shine during these rotations, developing pitch, rhythm and ensemble skills while working at their own pace to achieve success. They're doing a fabulous job!
I'd love to take this moment to thank the students, staff and families for welcoming me so warmly into the GRPS community. There's been a lot of learning happening for the students — and for me too, as I work on learning over 500 new names! It's been such a joy getting to know the students and share my passion for the performing arts. Looking forward to more music, movement and fun in Term 4 — including the Christmas concert!
