High Abilities

On Friday the 28th August we welcomed Ringwood North Primary School and Heathmont East Primary School as we hosted them for our Term 3 VHAP Masterclass. Select Year 5 & 6 VHAP participating students attended either the Maths or Writing workshops for the duration of the day.

The Writing Masterclass challenged students to gain understanding in how writers can deliberately control what a reader notices, feels and expects. Students developed their own writing piece throughout the day focussing on the following criteria: 

• To manipulate the amount of information they give the reader
• Use sentence length and structure to control pace
• Deliberately reveal or withhold information
• Create tension without simply stating an emotion
• Explain the choices they have made as an author

The Numeracy Masterclass saw some opportunities for code breaking activities which progressed to creating their own coded messages. Students were extremely creative and it was wonderful to see all the conversations and collaboration of ideas between the groups.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our APSMO teams on completing their fourth and final test this week which concludes the competition for 2026! Certificates of completion and high scoring awards will be handed to students in the Explorer, Maths Games and Olympiad teams next term at an assembly once we have received them from APSMO.
