Food Technology Update

Hi everyone,

It’s been another busy and rewarding semester for the Food Technology department at FHS. Here are some of the major highlights:

Our latest batch of Breakfast Bootcampers (Year 7) have just graduated from their 20-week introductory course. These students now have the skills to:

a) work safely, productively and respectfully in the kitchen,

b) cook up a storm, and

c) progress confidently into the Year 8 course Not Just Noodles, where the focus shifts to dinner recipes, more complex cooking techniques, and the $5 Meal Challenge!

Speaking of Not Just Noodles, three Year 8 groups completed this program through the Explore offering this semester. From next year, Not Just Noodles will become an elective, so if you’re heading into Year 8 in 2026, make sure you’ve completed your subject selections to book your place in the program.

In Years 9 and 10, we ran our second year of The Great Fitzroy Bake Off as part of the Extend program. This wildly popular subject has only grown stronger, with more recipes, more baking challenges, and—of course—more segments from the TV show that inspired it. For their major assessment, Bake Off students catered the Year 12 Graduation Afternoon Tea, and it was a smashing success — I was so proud of these guys!

Finally, our Fitzroy Flavourians published the tenth edition of the school’s much-loved digital food magazine, The Fitzroy Flavour. It’s remarkable to think that a project dreamed up during the 2020 lockdowns has now reached double digits—and is better than ever. As always, the Family Meal feature forms the heart of the magazine, and this edition includes some truly beautiful stories. You can find your copy via the News feed on Compass. Big congratulations to the Fitzroy Flavour Extend students who worked hard to meet the deadline.
