La Settimana della Lingua Italiana at FHS

From 10 to 14 November, Fitzroy High School celebrated La Settimana della Lingua Italiana, a joyful week dedicated to Italian language and culture. Classrooms were filled with lively activities as students explored Italian words, traditions, and stories. At lunchtime, the energy grew even stronger as the spaghetti-eating competition neared. Students and teachers joined in with great enthusiasm and fierce determination, each hoping to win the proud title of Fitzroy High’s best spaghetti eater.

The celebrations continued throughout the week with a taste of la Dolce Vita. The gelato and cannoli carretto—an artisan cart carefully built by Rocco in the woodwork room—was a major highlight. Each day, long lines of excited students gathered to buy delicious treats during lunch. The corridors were bright with the colours of the tricolore, and beautiful student-made posters decorated the walls. These posters shared facts about Italy’s unique geography, world-famous UNESCO sites, and rich culinary traditions.

At Fitzroy High we know that learning a second language opens doors to new ways of thinking, new friendships, and a richer understanding of the world.

La Settimana della Lingua Italiana was not only fun, but also a meaningful reminder of the beauty and depth of Italian culture. As the Italian saying goes, “La cultura è la luce dell’anima”—culture is the light of the soul.
