That New School Feeling

I moved to Melbourne about two months ago. During the time I've been here, I've been attending Fitzroy High. The first thing I've noticed about the school is that it has differences compared to the school I used to attend interstate. First off, there are VERY little uniform policies here, you essentially get to wear whatever you want, my previous school however was significantly more strict not allowing you to wear any accessories such as bracelets earrings makeup, not only this you were expected to wear black leather shoes and white socks, no hair dye and of course you had to wear the school uniform. The students at this school don't have to worry about any of these unnecessary rules, which is something I like a lot about this school. 

The layout of my previous school consisted of small single-classroom buildings placed around the school; however, in Fitzroy High, there is only one large building that consists of nearly every classroom in the school.

Cost of Living Crises Hits FHS

The Students at Fitzroy High School have noticed that the food at the canteen is starting to cost more and more this year. Many say they are paying more for the same, sometimes even less for the same snacks and meals since last year some of these prices are going up such as 1 dollar but now they are costing 30 cents more or 6 dollars for a small HSP or 7 dollars for a large HSP to now  7 dollars for a small and 10 dollars for a large not only that but some of the quality of the food items have decreased like the tenders and chips being one of the best items to the worst item. There are some students that think that the store the canteen buys from is raising prices just to make more money. “I used to be able to get lunch for $5. Now it’s almost $7,” one student said. “I am starting to not be able to afford lunch because of these prices ,” said another student. Because of the higher prices, some students are skipping lunch. The Students hope the school could find cheaper stores to buy from. The students hope the school will do something to make canteen prices fair again.

Library Hours of Operation Changed

The library is closing due to people playing video games and not eating lunch before it is time to do so. Now, library access is halved every second day, and recess is closed for 15 minutes every day. Due to the change and closure all day on Thursdays and Mondays, students who regularly go to the library to take refuge from the cold of winter or the heat of summer now line the hallway waiting to go in, even when the library is closed all day. 

Some students have told me, “ Why did the school close the library during the winter and expect us to have a positive opinion on the closure?’’ “I am so freezing. "It looks so very warm in there”, says the anonymous students. The librarians had no comments on the topic.  

 At this point, there are no intentions to return to the previous approach or methods, unless, of course, they reconsider and decide to make changes sometime during the summer months.  However, the teachers remain steadfast in their opinion that the library should close.
