Reflection

Relationships are at the heart of who we are. They shape us, challenge us and help us discover the best version of ourselves. At Mazenod College, we are reminded that growth is never a solitary journey. Whether it is the friendship of classmates, the guidance of teachers, the support of families, or the bonds formed through sport, service and faith, our lives are enriched through our connections with others.

As an Oblate community, we are inspired by St Eugene de Mazenod, who believed that faith is lived in relationship. He recognised the dignity of every person and encouraged people to build communities marked by compassion, respect and genuine care. In a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, we are called to be people who reach out, listen deeply and walk alongside one another. Strong relationships not only strengthen our community, but also become a powerful witness to the Gospel, reminding us that we are never meant to journey alone.

For all the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, guardians and father figures in our College community who celebrated Father's Day last Sunday, we offer this prayer to St Joseph, a model of faithful and selfless fatherhood:

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,

Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

To you God entrusted his only Son;

in you Mary placed her trust;

with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,

show yourself a father

and guide us in the path of life.

Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,

and defend us from every evil. 

Amen.

May St Joseph inspire all fathers and father figures to lead with courage, patience and love, fostering the spirit of family that lies at the heart of both the Gospel and the vision of St Eugene de Mazenod.

Kairos Retreat

Last week, a group of Year 11 and 12 students stepped away from the busyness of daily life to participate in the Kairos Retreat at St John of God Retreat Centre in Shoalwater. The word Kairos comes from the Greek language and refers not simply to the passing of time, but to a special moment of grace, opportunity, challenge and encounter with God. Over four days and three nights, students were invited to reflect deeply on their lives, relationships, faith and future, while building stronger connections with one another in an atmosphere of trust, openness and support.

Throughout the retreat, the boys explored the presence of God in their own lives, in the gifts and talents they have been given, in their families and in the friendships that sustain them. The experience was enriched by the generous leadership of one of our Old Boys, Karl, assisted by two current Year 12 students, Matthew and Mitchell, who attended Kairos themselves last year and returned to help guide others through the experience. We were also privileged to be accompanied by Fr Michael McMahon OMI and Fr Michael Twigg OMI, along with the wonderful support of Emily Voight, Matthew Sharpe and Susana Aguilar. 

While many returned to school a little tired, all came back with a renewed appreciation of themselves, their peers and the relationships that matter most. Kairos remains one of the most meaningful experiences in the College calendar, and we thank everyone who contributed to making it such a memorable and transformative retreat.
