Religious Education

Scripture and Jesus - The Synoptic Gospels (Continued)

In this unit, students explore the significance of the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) and how the writers portray Jesus. Students will come to recognise the Gospels are a record of Christ’s life and teaching. Students will analyse passages that are common across the synoptic Gospels. They will come to recognise and understand that the synoptic Gospels, as sacred texts, help us encounter the person of Jesus Christ and deepen our relationship with God. Students will become confident users of the Bible as they explore a range of passages in the synoptic Gospels.  

God, Religion and Life - The Eastern Catholic Churches

In this unit students will recognise that in Australia, Catholics come from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, bringing with them distinctive traditions and celebrations. Students will deepen their understanding that with all its diversity, the Catholic Church in Australia, both Western and Eastern traditions, remains firmly part of the Universal Church.

English

In the English Block each day, students will participate in daily review, fluency pairs with a fluency, vocabulary and comprehension focus, spelling, writing and understanding and responding to literature.

Creating written texts and understanding and responding to literature 

Students will examine and experiment with texts that cross genres. For example, informative texts that also entertain and persuade. Students will create their own texts for different purposes that do not follow the form and function of a single genre. They will enhance their written texts by selecting appropriate multimodal features, including illustrations, maps, graphs and audio. Students will cover the following texts - Bright New World by Cindy Forde , Dry to Dry by Pamela Freeman and Liz Anelli and The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.

Reading Comprehension

Students will develop their skills and comprehension of texts for a wide purpose by analysing structures and language and monitoring their comprehension during Daily Fluency tasks.

Vocabulary 

The students will also continue to develop their skills in persuasive writing and speaking skills  through active participation in a Stage 3 Public Speaking Competition. There will be further details shared through COMPASS. 

Spelling

This term, Year 6 students will continue using the Sound Waves spelling program during their English lessons. Through the Sound Waves workbook, students will develop their understanding of spelling patterns, word structures and strategies that support accurate spelling across all areas of their learning. Regular classroom activities will provide opportunities for students to apply these skills in their writing and build confidence as spellers.

Mathematics

Mathematics lessons will be taught daily with a consistent structure of Daily Review, Mental Arithmetic, Explicit Teaching, and Routine Practice activities with Working Mathematically skills embedded throughout the lesson. Mathematics lessons will be differentiated to meet the learning needs of all students. 

The topics taught in Term 3 are;

Science and Technology

Students will be learning about the difference between contact and non-contact forces and how energy is transformed from one form to another. Students are provided with an opportunity to investigate how electrical energy can control movement in products and systems. This unit of work will develop students’ abilities to design, test and evaluate a product or system that demonstrates energy transformation, further developing an understanding of the interrelationship between force and energy.

History

This term we commence the topic ‘Australia as a Nation’. This topic moves from colonial Australia to the development of Australia as a nation, particularly after 1901. Students explore the factors that led to Federation and experiences of democracy and citizenship over time. They understand the significance of Australia’s British heritage, the Westminster system and other models that influenced the development of Australia's system of government. Students learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and their contributions to Australia's economic and social development.

Later in the term, students will begin researching and preparing a presentation on a notable figure from Australian history. These presentations will be showcased in Term 4 during our 'Night of the Notables' event. Further information and details to be shared in the coming weeks.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In sport, students will develop their skills and understanding in netball and target games through a range of engaging, game-based activities. They will build fundamental movement skills including passing, catching, footwork, striking, aiming, and moving into space, while developing coordination, agility, and game awareness. Through modified netball games, students will explore attacking and defensive strategies, teamwork, communication, and decision-making skills. Through target games, students will develop accuracy, placement, control, and tactical thinking through activities that involve striking, throwing, and aiming into open spaces or designated targets. Students will build confidence, and resilience while being encouraged to participate actively, work collaboratively, and apply movement strategies across a range of sporting contexts.  

Important sport dates:

In Personal Development this Term, Year 6 will continue with the program Open Parachute. The program aims to reduce stigma and generate authentic dialogue in classrooms about the real issues students face. The psychological skills-building exercises aim to increase empathy, self-compassion, self-awareness, mental health literacy, and self-efficacy in students.

Amadeus Music Program

Students will continue with the Amadeus Music Education Program and participate in activities in listening, performing, and organising sound within their regular classroom Music lessons. 

• It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they:

  • Arrive on time for each lesson

  • Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson

  • Bring their Essential Elements* music book

  • Bring a lead pencil and eraser

Creative Arts

Visual Arts

Students will be focusing the first few art lessons on our Book Week artwork project. Students will create thoughtful artworks that visually respond to the themes, characters, or messages in the chosen book. They will use a variety of materials and techniques to develop individual artworks.

Students will engage in Art lessons this term with our Specialist Art Teacher, Mrs Carni Brown. Students will be looking at the Young Archies Portraits. Through making and appreciating students will look at:

• Understanding Portraiture
• Study specific elements of a portrait
• Sketch proportions of the face using expression and emotion.
• Create Portraits setting up an Art Gallery of their own.

Music

Year 6 are learning how dance tells a story through movement, music and character. Using Aladdin as inspiration, students explore different dance styles, analyse choreography, and learn how performers use space, time and dynamics to show personality, mood and scene changes. They warm up safely, practise full‑body coordination, create movement for props and settings, and work in small groups to choreograph and refine character‑based dances. 

Homework 

Homework can be accessed via the Google Classroom Homework page. The slides clearly outline the tasks that students are expected to complete each week. The students have been made aware of the expectations around the presentation and delivery of their homework. Please note, For Semester 2, Homework is online Friday and due the following Friday commencing Week 2. If your child is unable to complete their homework, please communicate this to their classroom teacher via a note. 

It is an expectation that your child is bringing their diary with them to school every day. The diary is a means of communication between home and school, a record of their nightly reading and a useful tool to remind them of important dates. This is good preparation for high school where diaries are mandatory.
