Religious Education

Scripture and Jesus - Our Sacred Scripture

This unit explores the Bible as our Sacred Scripture. Students review the great story of our Tradition: its significant people and events. The unit also introduces the students to the formation and structure of the Bible.  

Good Stewards of Creation - God, Religion and Life

This unit explores creation as a gift from God, which we are called to care for and protect. In this unit, students will develop a deeper understanding of God as Creator, and will appreciate more fully that creation is good.  We are called to be one with each other and the earth community.  The unit focuses on developing an understanding of our responsibility to care for God’s creation. It also explores our decisions to respect and care for the environment which will affect our world, both now and in the future. Students will identify issues of misuse and mismanagement in the environment and explore how we, as stewards of creation, can respond appropriately and compassionately. The unit will introduce the concept of ‘ecological conversion’ which calls us to change the ways in which we relate to each other and to the whole of God’s creation. The students will identify their call to challenge those ways and structures that oppress and exploit creation. 

English

Students explore how to discern between argument and authority in texts and how perspectives are communicated. This includes listening, reading and interpreting  the meaning in various texts. Students become informed and critical viewers to determine the argument (a stated position about an idea) and how responding to these concepts  represent a particular position on an issue. Determining how the authority - how trustworthy, authentic or valid these ideas are represented in texts. Students will be  engaging in the process of planning, drafting, editing and producing a hybrid informative/persuasive text that includes modality, nominalisation rhetorical devices and questions and also producing hybrid imaginative/persuasive texts.

Public Speaking 

Our Whole School Public Speaking Competition will be held this term. Students will plan, rehearse and present a persuasive speech on a given topic using relevant communication skills and language features.

Spelling

Students will follow the Year 5 Soundwaves spelling program focusing on weekly phonemes and graphemes. They will read a wide range of texts in our Daily Fluency. A main focus will be reading fluency and developing comprehension strategies including analysing text structures and interpreting Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary. 

Mathematics

Mathematics lessons will be taught daily with a consistent structure of Daily Review, Mental Arithmetic, Explicit Teaching, Routine Practice activities with Working Mathematically skills embedded throughout the lesson. The topics taught in Term 3 are: 2D shapes, Area, Multiplication, Mass & Data.

Science and Technology

This term, students will learn about the Material World strand that focuses on how the properties of a range of materials and the way in which they are combined, determine their use and inform design solutions. Students investigate the different properties of solids, liquids and gases, and consider combining and separating mixtures. Stage 3 of this strand introduces students to fundamental concepts of chemistry and is an introduction to materials technologies.

History

This term, students study colonial Australia in the 1800s. Students look at the founding of British colonies and the development of a colony. They learn about what life was like for different groups in the colonial period. They examine significant events and people, political and economic developments, social structures and settlement patterns.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In sport, students will develop their skills and understanding in netball and target games through a range of engaging, game-based activities. They will build fundamental movement skills including passing, catching, footwork, striking, aiming, and moving into space, while developing coordination, agility, and game awareness. Through modified netball games, students will explore attacking and defensive strategies, teamwork, communication, and decision-making skills. Through target games, students will develop accuracy, placement, control, and tactical thinking through activities that involve striking, throwing, and aiming into open spaces or designated targets. Students will build confidence, and resilience while being encouraged to participate actively, work collaboratively, and apply movement strategies across a range of sporting contexts.

  Amadeus Music Program

Students will continue with the Amadeus Music Education Program and participate in activities in listening, performing, and organising sound within their regular classroom Music lessons. 

• It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they:

  • Arrive on time for each lesson

  • Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson

  • Bring their Essential Elements* music book

  • Bring a lead pencil and eraser

Creative Arts

DANCE

In Dance With Mr Parlato, Year 5 are exploring our Earthwise dance unit, where students use movement to represent natural ideas such as waves, wind, terrain and animals. Each lesson builds creativity and teamwork as students improvise, respond to choreography, sketch movement pathways, manipulate actions and create their own dance sequences. Through this work, they strengthen coordination, confidence and understanding of the dance elements space, time and dynamics while deepening their connection to the natural world.

ART

This term in Visual Arts, students will be working with Mrs Brown to create artworks celebrating Book Week. They will also begin a Visual Arts unit titled Harmony (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives). Throughout this unit, students will explore the concept of living in harmony with others and with the natural environment through the arts. Drawing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, students will develop an appreciation of the connections between people, culture, and Country while expressing their understanding through creative artworks. 

Homework 

In Year 5, students are expected to complete 40 minutes of homework each night. It is expected that your child reads for 20 minutes nightly as part of their 40 minutes of homework and records their reading in their diaries with parental/guardian signature. Your child will need to bring their diary to school when their homework is due. 

Students will complete their homework on a weekly basis. Homework will begin on Thursday Week 1. Completed work is due the following Thursday and will be returned to students that day. 

A homework grid will be sent home in their homework book clearly outlining the tasks. Each week there will be spelling, grammar or comprehension, reading, religion and math tasks to complete. There are also some optional tasks for the term.
