Religious Education

During Term 3, students will engage in the topics of:

Celebrating Mass

This unit explores how Catholics gather at Sunday Mass to be nourished by Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Students are introduced to the key moments of the Mass within the Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist and the Concluding Rites. Students deepen their understanding of how we are sent out to live after celebrating the Mass by identifying how we can live like Jesus.

 The Kingdom of God

This unit emphasises the Bible as Sacred Scripture and the Word of God. Students explore how Moses and Joseph, the dreamer, were chosen by God to grow the Kingdom. This unit will also explore parables that teach us about the Kingdom of God. Students will reflect on how they are called to build the Kingdom through their relationship with God and others.

English

Our quality literature focus this term will be focused on the textual concepts of context, perspective and argument and imagery, symbolism and connotation. Students will explore these concepts through quality literature with a focus on persuasive techniques, persuasive and informative text structure and forming paragraphs using multiple sentences.

Reading - The students will continue to read a variety of texts with automaticity, focusing on self-correcting errors and retrieving words automatically or by sounding out the word in their head instead of blending out loud. Students will continue to develop their skills to comprehend texts by activating background knowledge, vocabulary knowledge and by making connections to the text. 

Phonics and Spelling - Students are engaging with phonics and spelling on a daily basis. Students are explicitly taught different letter/sound correspondences. The focus this term is on vowel digraphs. 

Handwriting - The students will continue to work on their pencil grip, correct letter formation and writing within and on the lines.

Mathematics

The students will explicitly be taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus with a focus on using mathematical language, reasoning and understanding. Activities are differentiated to cater for all student needs and ability. Mathematics lessons occur daily for 60 minutes including a daily review and mental

Science and Technology

This term students will be looking at and investigating the topic, ‘Living World’ with a focus on animals. Living World focuses on the features of living things, their environment and how they change and reproduce. This strand develops students’ understanding of how living things and their environment play a central role in the support for and survival of humans. Towards the end of the term, students will complete a design and make where they apply their knowledge of the needs of living things.

History

This term the students will be looking at present and past family life. This topic provides a study of present and past family life within the context of the student’s own world. Students learn similarities and differences in family life by comparing the present with the past. They begin to explore the links and the changes that occur over time and are introduced to the use of historical sources. Students will also create and present a speech about their family's past. To further consolidate their learning on families past and present, Year One will be attending an excursion to the Schoolhouse Museum in North Ryde on 11th August.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In sport, students will continue to develop fundamental movement skills through a range of invasion, target, and striking/fielding games. They will practise skills such as kicking, passing, dribbling, aiming, striking, rolling, and catching through modified games including soccer, basketball, and tee-ball. Through engaging individual, partner, and team activities, students will build coordination, spatial awareness, teamwork, confidence, and positive attitudes towards lifelong physical activity. 

In addition, students will engage in the ‘Open Parachute’ wellbeing program. Through this program, they will explore topics such as forming friendships, managing strong emotions, setting personal boundaries and recognising unsafe situations. The program also includes a strong focus on developing a growth mindset, helping students to approach challenges with confidence and persistence.

The Term 3 ‘Home Safety’ unit will enable students to identify and demonstrate strategies that will keep them safe in and around the home. Students will engage in a variety of learning activities around safe places to play, safe use of medicines, harmful substances around the home, fire safety rules and how to call for emergency services.

Creative Arts

Students will create artworks using a variety of media and materials such as watercolours, oil pastels, collage and paint. They will explore and appreciate Kandinsky’s artworks and create their own artwork based on his unique form and style. The artworks that the students complete this term links in with English, History, Religious Education and Science and Technology units.

In Dance with Mr Parlato students explore Australian stories, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and the natural environment. Through movement, storytelling, and appreciation discussions, students are developing foundational dance skills while deepening their understanding of Australia’s First Peoples and the landscapes and animals that shape their stories.

Homework 

This term, homework will consist of daily reading and the review of spelling words linked to the phonics sounds being taught in class. Parents are kindly asked to sign the Reading Log each night and ensure it is returned to school each Thursday in their child’s reading folder.

In addition, students will receive a differentiated Mathematics worksheet to be completed each week. Homework books will be sent home every Friday and are to be returned each Thursday for marking.
