Religious Education

God, Religion and Life - Faith, through prayer and action

In this unit, students will explore prayer and action as a means of growing in faith. They will be introduced to experiences of prayer, drawn from the rich Catholic tradition. Students will explore how Jesus taught us to pray, the place and purpose of prayer and a variety of prayer styles. Students will come to understand that it is the Holy Spirit, alive and active in our lives, that gives us the courage to follow Jesus. The unit focuses on exploring examples of people who demonstrate their faith, inspired by the Holy Spirit, lived out in prayer and action.

Program Morality & Justice - The Commandments

This unit examines how the Commandments of God guide us to live the Christian life. This forms the basis for introducing and exploring Jesus’ new commandment with reference back to the Ten Commandments. The unit leads to a deeper understanding of how the Commandments guide us in living in right relationship with God and others.

English

Students will listen to, read, view, and interpret spoken, written and multimodal texts where the primary purpose is to persuade. These encompass Aboriginal stories, non-fiction texts, picture books and various print and digital formats including advertising, debates, arguments, discussions, polemics, opinion articles and the novel Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. Students will understand how different types of texts vary in their language choices depending on purpose and context. They will identify and apply characteristic features of persuasive writing when planning, drafting, and publishing their own texts.

Students will also continue to develop their persuasive writing and speaking skills through active participation in the Stage 2 Public Speaking Competition. Further details will be shared via COMPASS.

Students will continue practising their reading and comprehension strategies through explicit lessons and Reading Groups. They will also engage in the ‘Soundwaves’ spelling program. Content words will be assessed throughout the term.

Students will develop and demonstrate their speaking and listening skills through various opportunities, including small- and large-group presentations.

Mathematics

Mathematics lessons will be taught through a consistent structure of Daily Review, Mental Arithmetic, Explicit Teaching and Routine Practice activities with Working Mathematically skills embedded throughout the lesson. 

This term, students will develop their mathematical understanding across the core syllabus focus areas of Mass, Additive Relations, Two-Dimensional Spatial Structure (2D Shape), Area, Multiplicative Relations and Representing Numbers Using Place Value (Decimals). 

To support learning for every student, tasks will be targeted and differentiated based on individual growth and conceptual understanding. Flexible grouping within classrooms will ensure learning remains responsive to student needs. Parents can further support their child’s mathematical fluency at home by regularly practising the automatic recall of multiplication and division facts.

Science and Technology

In Science and Technology this term, students will explore the Physical World focus area. Students will explore and investigate how light, heat and electrical energy work, and how different forces can change the way objects move and behave. They’ll learn how energy can be created, transferred and used in everyday life. Through hands-on investigations, students will discover how energy and forces are connected and how they play a role in making products and systems work. 

History

This term, students will study the unit ‘First Contacts’. This unit gives students insight into what it was like to explore the seas during the early modern period. They will identify how major discoveries changed the world, as well as the positive and negative effects of world exploration. Students will also examine the impact the arrival of Captain Cook had on Indigenous Australians.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In sport, students will develop their skills and understanding in netball and target games through a range of engaging, game-based activities. They will build fundamental movement skills including passing, catching, footwork, striking, aiming, and moving into space, while developing coordination, agility, and game awareness. Through modified netball games, students will explore attacking and defensive strategies, teamwork, communication, and decision-making skills. Through target games, students will develop accuracy, placement, control, and tactical thinking through activities that involve striking, throwing, and aiming into open spaces or designated targets. Students will build confidence and resilience while being encouraged to participate actively, work collaboratively, and apply movement strategies across a range of sporting contexts.  

Open Parachute will continue to be implemented K-6 on Fridays. Open Parachute aims to provide practical support on mental health to students. The program aims to reduce stigma and generate authentic dialogue in classrooms about the real issues students face. The psychological skills-building exercises aim to increase empathy, self-compassion, self-awareness, mental health literacy, and self-efficacy in students.

  Amadeus Music Program

Students will continue with the Amadeus Music Education Program and participate in activities in listening, performing, and organising sound within their regular classroom Music lessons. 

• It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they:

  • Arrive on time for each lesson

  • Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson

  • Bring their Essential Elements* music book

  • Bring a lead pencil and eraser

Creative Arts

This term, students will be working with Mrs Brown to create artworks inspired by a selected book in celebration of Book Week, using visual arts to explore characters, themes, and stories.

Students will also participate in the Creative Arts unit Games, which explores dance, drama, music, and visual arts through the concept of games. In dance, students use games as inspiration for creating and performing movement sequences. In drama, they use games to develop and tell stories. In music, students explore the styles of music associated with gaming, while in visual arts they use gaming consoles as inspiration for creating both 2D and 3D artworks. Throughout the unit, students will develop their creativity, imagination, and artistic skills across a range of creative disciplines.

With Mr Parlato, Year 4 are learning how dancers use space, time and dynamics to communicate ideas, and this term they focus especially on time as they explore movement inspired by games. Students warm up safely, improvise using different game themes, respond to images, music, movement videos and tactile objects, and work in small groups to choreograph, rehearse and refine short dance sequences. Through these activities they build creativity, coordination, teamwork and confidence while learning to express ideas through structured movement.

Homework 

It is recommended that Year 4 students spend up to 30 minutes on homework per day. This includes 20 minutes of reading every night. Students are required to record what was read in their reading log each day. Parents are asked to sign the reading log each week. A reading log and homework grid will be glued into the student homework books. The homework grid will also be shared with the students via Google Classroom. The homework grid will outline the set tasks to be completed each week. 

A 'Maths Plus' mentals workbook will also be provided to students. One unit of work will be set and we ask that this be returned each Friday. Students are asked to attempt the sets 1-3, the extension set is optional. For instant feedback could you please mark the work with your child each week using the answers at the back of the book. 

The Homework book and Maths Plus book will be due each Friday.
