Religious Education

God, Religion and Life - Christian Goodness

Year Three will begin term 3 exploring the 'God, Religion and Life- Christian Goodness' unit. In this unit, students will learn that they are created and loved by God. Students will learn about the second story of creation, which speaks of the creative act of God, an outpouring of divine love and goodness, in which we are all called to share. The students are encouraged to explore their giftedness and identify how they can use their gifts for the good of all. The students will identify ways they can give glory, praise, and thanks to God through prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist. The unit finally focuses on sharing God’s love, through the ways we live in the right relationship with God and other people, using Jesus as our example. 

The Sacrament of Eucharist

This unit develops students’ understanding of the celebration of the Eucharist. The unit focuses on the key parts of the Mass and explores the ways Christ is present. It presents the Mass as central to the life of the community. In sharing the Eucharist we become one body in Christ. During this unit, students are encouraged to attend Mass to embed learnings (actions, words and symbols) of the structure and significance of the Mass.

English

This term, Year 3 will explore persuasive texts in the form of literature and speeches. These texts include Dear Mrs LaRue by Mark Teague, and The Great Kapak Tree by Lynne Cherry as well as multimodal persuasive speeches. The students will develop their skills in persuasive writing through a Stage 2 Public Speaking Competition. Students will follow the ‘Seven Steps of Writing’ program to compose a speech and will be taught public speaking skills. They will also be taught explicit skills in relation to reading, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. 

Our daily literacy lessons will focus on grammar, punctuation, handwriting, and reading comprehension, supported by the whole-school Sound Waves Spelling program.

Mathematics

The students are explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus. The topics taught in Term 3 include: Data, Representing Number, Time Additive Relations and Multiplicative Relations, The students will continue to engage in a numeracy fluency program to develop counting patterns, as well as facts and strategies for mathematical operations. Each class will provide differentiated activities according to their class's learning needs.

The students will also take part in daily review and use their Maths Mental books to build fluency and help consolidate their skills.

Science and Technology

In Science and Technology, Year 3 will be exploring the Material World. Students will investigate how solids and liquids change state when heat is added or removed, and explore the properties of natural and processed materials. They will also test how different material properties affect their suitability for everyday products and develop their own hands-on design solutions.

History

The unit for this term is ‘Community and Remembrance’. This topic provides a study of identity and diversity in both a local and broader context. Students explore the historical features and diversity of their community. They examine local, state and national symbols and emblems of significance, and celebrations and commemorations, both locally and in other places around the world.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

In sport, students will develop their skills and understanding in netball and target games through a range of engaging, game-based activities. They will build fundamental movement skills including passing, catching, footwork, striking, aiming, and moving into space, while developing coordination, agility, and game awareness. Through modified netball games, students will explore attacking and defensive strategies, teamwork, communication, and decision-making skills. Through target games, students will develop accuracy, placement, control, and tactical thinking through activities that involve striking, throwing, and aiming into open spaces or designated targets. Students will build confidence, and resilience while being encouraged to participate actively, work collaboratively, and apply movement strategies across a range of sporting contexts. 

We will continue using the Open Parachute program to support student well-being. Through practical exercises, students learn self-awareness, empathy, and strategies for managing emotions and mental health.

  Amadeus Music Program

Students will participate in the Amadeus Music Education Program and participate in activities in listening, performing and organising sound within their regular Classroom Music lessons. 

• It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they:

  • Arrive on time for each lesson

  • Bring their instrument and required accessories to every lesson

  • Bring their Essential Elements* music book

  • Bring a lead pencil and eraser

Creative Arts

This Term our Visual Arts unit explores the various traditions and cultures around the world and how this is expressed via the different artforms. Students continue to develop skills within the individual artforms expanding their knowledge and understanding of different media, structures, approaches and experiences. Students expand their vocabulary to include terminology not found in everyday western art forms.

This term, students are engaging in an exciting dance unit exploring movement traditions from around the world. Each lesson introduces a new country or region, allowing students to respond to music, learn traditional cultural dance moves, improvise, choreograph, and perform. Throughout the unit, they are continuously developing safe dance habits, spatial awareness, teamwork, and expressive movement.

Homework 

It is recommended that Year 3 students spend up to 30 minutes on homework per day. This includes 20 minutes of reading every night. 

Students are required to record what was read in their School Diary each day. Parents are to sign their child’s diary. The homework grid will be shared with the students in Week 2. Both diaries and homework will be due each Monday. Please make sure your child has filled in their daily reading in their diary and you have signed it and their homework books are brought in to school every Monday.

This Term students will be bringing home targeted maths consolidation sheets as part of their homework. These tasks are carefully aligned with the concepts and skills introduced in class the previous week, such as number operations, measurement, geometry, or data. The purpose of these sheets is to reinforce learning, build confidence and give students an opportunity to practise and apply their understanding in a supported way.

Important Dates for Year Three

Music & Library

Music, Library and Sport classes for Year 3 are on Wednesdays.

Each week, students will have the opportunity to borrow books from our school library. Please ensure your child brings their Library Bag to school on this day.

Sport 

Sports days will be on Wednesday only for Term 3.

Students are to wear their sports uniform only on this day.
