Visual Arts

The Foundation students have been looking at the text, 'Red House, Tree House' and have created their own hot air balloon where they experimented with different materials, colours and patterns to create their artwork. We explored a variety of designs they could draw onto their balloon and then they used paint sticks to design the balloon using different patterns and colours.  They explored cross-hatching to create texture on their basket and finished it off by drawing a person in their basket and ropes to attach it to the balloon.

Grade 1 viewed the picture story book 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. The story is a about a boy and penguin who become friends. Students identified the main colour used in the book (blue) before painting and stamping a background fit for a penguin.

Grade 2 students continued exploring the works of Vincent Van Gogh, this time viewing and responding to his Sunflowers series. Students have painted yellow, gold and orange and then patterned the paper. Next step will be to cut out the petals and construct the sunflower.

Grade 4 have had a sneak preview of the illustrations in the next novel 'The Arrival' by Shaun Tan. Using these illustrations as inspiration, students practised pattern making along the edge of a paper plate. These designs will then be drawn onto the plates with sharpie, before being organised into a fish/ bird creature, similar to the illustrations in the text.

Grade 6 have spent some time experimenting with watercolours. This experimentation will soon be put to use in creating a mountainous landscape inspired by the work of American artist Jen Aranyi. Here are our fineliner and sharpie drawings thus far.
