Weeks 6 & 7

Current Learning

English - In Reading, we have been exploring different strategies to help us understand texts in greater detail. We have practised skills such as making connections, asking questions, and identifying key information to deepen our comprehension. Students have also begun applying these strategies in their own story writing to make their ideas clearer and more interesting.

Maths - In Maths, we have been learning about division.  We have started by working on sharing objects into equal groups, and exploring how some numbers can be divided while others can be more difficult.

Inquiry - This term in Inquiry, we will be exploring the world and learning about the many different cultures within our community. It is wonderful to see students proudly share about their own culture, telling their peers about the special celebrations, traditions, and attractions from their countries. These conversations help us celebrate diversity and learn from one another’s experiences.

SEL - In SEL, we have been learning how to build positive relationships with others by using respectful communication and appreciating our similarities and differences. As part of this learning, students have embarked on an exciting quest through the Kindness Kingdom, where they earn badges for showing acts of kindness, cooperation, and empathy. This adventure has encouraged students to practise these important skills in fun and meaningful ways.

Supporting Your Child's Learning at Home

If you are looking for ways to support your child's learning at home you may wish to try some of the ideas below.

Reading

  • Enjoy the take-home readers each night to build fluency and confidence.
  • Read poems, comics, or magazines to explore different types of texts.
  • Ask questions before, during, and after reading to help your child think about the story and its meaning.

Writing

  • Practise writing sentences using capital letters and full stops correctly.
  • Use phonics knowledge to sound out and spell new or unfamiliar words.
  • Experiment with using different sentence starters to make writing more varied.

Maths

  • Practise skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s starting from a different number.
  • Play card or board games that involve adding or subtracting numbers.
  • Read analogue clocks together and talk about different times of the day.
  • Practise subtraction strategies such as counting backwards or using a number line.

Take Home Reading

In Year 2, students change their readers on the same day they visit the library, bringing home two new books each week. Reading the same books multiple times during the week helps them understand different parts of the text and develop a deeper overall comprehension.
