Year 3 - Middle Unit

It has been another busy fortnight in Year 3, with students continuing to build their skills across Reading, Writing and Mathematics. They have been working hard to apply their learning in meaningful ways and should be proud of the progress they are making.

During our Reading sessions, the Year 3 students have been exploring the Story Mountain, a framework that helps authors structure narrative texts. They have analysed authors' word choices and discussed how language is used to create particular feelings and images for the reader. The students have also been learning the comprehension strategy of visualisation, creating a "mind movie" while reading by using the clues provided by the author. Students who can visualise what they are reading often develop a deeper understanding of the text and gain greater enjoyment from reading.

In Writing, the Year 3 students have begun creating their own hybrid narratives based on the life cycle of an animal they have researched for their Term 3 project. Using the Story Mountain framework to guide their writing, they are combining factual information with imaginative storytelling. A strong focus has been placed on carefully selecting descriptive vocabulary to engage their readers and bring their stories to life.

In Maths, the Year 3 students have continued exploring efficient multiplication strategies, including doubling and halving, partitioning, and using known facts to solve more complex multiplication problems. Next week, we will begin our division unit, where students will apply their knowledge of multiplication to the inverse operation of division and continue developing their mathematical reasoning skills.

Wild Action Zoo Incursion

The Year 3 students are looking forward to the Wild Action Zoo incursion on Friday the11th of September. Parents should have received an event notification via Compass yesterday. These exciting sessions will provide students with a hands-on opportunity to deepen their understanding of animal life cycles while meeting a variety of Australian animals up close. We are sure it will be a memorable learning experience.
