Reading

Over the first few weeks of the term, students revisited our classroom reading expectations and routines to establish positive habits.

Students revised key comprehension strategies by making meaningful connections between texts, including text-to-text, text-to-self and text-to-world connections. They also revisited the skills of summarising and synthesising, identifying important information and developing a deeper understanding of what they read.

Students shared their favourite books, authors and genres, explaining why they love reading and recommending texts to their classmates. These discussions helped build a positive reading culture and encouraged students to explore a wider range of books.

Writing

During Writing, students were introduced to information writing and explored the purpose and features of informative texts. They compared a range of information texts to identify common features and discuss how authors organise information to inform their readers.

Students explored the difference between facts and opinions and why information texts are based on factual information. They identified the key elements of an information text, including engaging titles, introductions, organised paragraphs with subheadings, factual language and concluding statements. 

Numeracy

During Numeracy, students strengthened their problem-solving skills by using the CUBES strategy to solve worded problems. This approach helped students identify key information, determine the mathematical operation required, and check that their answers were reasonable.

Students also began their learning in Measurement, with a focus on calculating the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Students focused on converting between different units of measurement and selecting the most appropriate unit for different situations.

Throughout these learning experiences, students were encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking, apply efficient strategies, and build confidence when solving problems.
