RACEDAY INDUSTRY TOUR REPORT

On Tuesday, 28 July, we attended the Raceday Industry Tour at the Swan Hill Racecourse, organised by Murray Mallee LLEN. We had the opportunity to learn about the many jobs involved in the racing industry and what happens behind the scenes on a race day.
During the tour, we visited areas that the general public would not be allowed to see, including the stewards’ room. We were fortunate enough to be allowed to remain with the stewards whilst they interviewed and reprimanded three jockeys for an incident that occurred during the previous race. One of the stewards is a former student, Tai, who took us through her responsibilities on race day. We also visited the race caller’s box, where we also spent time with the judge confirming the photo finish place holders. We also watched the horses being loaded into the starting barriers, toured the stables and veterinary block.
We had the chance to speak with many industry professionals, including stewards, race callers, the Clerk of the Course, veterinarians, and barrier attendants. Overall, it was a great experience, and we would like to thank Murray Mallee LLEN for organising the day, Carl Hufer for leading the tour, and Kylie for taking us.
