FORENSIC SCIENCE INCURSION - EDUCATION INTERACTIVE

On Friday 31st July our year 8 and some year 7 students had the opportunity to engage with Education Interactive, a passionate team of professionals who are all about engaging students in science and encouraging the uptake of STEM subjects in later school years. They present their workshops in Forensic Science to schools across Australia, UK and Ireland. We were lucky enough to have Genevieve attend and present the workshop ‘A Case of Identity’.

This interactive workshop enabled students to examine the following crime scene scenario:

‘A missing 17-year-old school girl is found dead in a disused military bunker. The girl’s parents reported her missing four days prior when she failed to return home from school. There are signs of a struggle and a substantial wound to the head appears to be the cause of death.’

This case explored the importance of cyber safety with social networks, the dangers of drink spiking and the consequences of taking risks. Students determine what online friend Sally met with and how she died.

Students saw how different forensic techniques enabled them to determine what happened and who was involved in each aspect of the crime event.

Students investigated crime scene stations including:

- Fingerprinting

- Time of death determination

- Physical fits tests

- Toxicology analysis

- Digital microscopy

- Impression evidence

- Autopsy report

- Hair and fibre analysis

- Digital evidence

- DNA profiling

This workshop enabled students to see how different forms of science can lead to exciting careers in the forensic science field. We would like to thank Genevieve from Education Interactive for an engaging and insightful day with our students.
