Maths

The Preps are learning about place value, which helps them understand the value of each digit in a number based on its position. The students began by creating 'teen numbers' using ten frames and counting cubes. They then matched the collections with the correct teen numerals. Additionally, the students practised adding one more and one less to teen numbers, counting the objects using one-to-one correspondence, and stating the new number. The Preps are enjoying playing the game 'I have ... who has one more or one less'.

Literacy

In literacy, the students learnt about tricky words and why certain words are called such. They practised saying the words in pairs and then writing the words. A new sound /k/ and letter 'c' was also introduced. The students are using the tricky words and familiar sounds to read words and sentences. As part of phonemic awareness, the Preps rotate between several stations, such as consolidating their initial sound identification, writing simple CVC words, reading decodable readers, manipulating sounds to create CVC words, and syllable clapping.

Inquiry

The students are learning about animal habitats and the survival needs of various animals. They chose one of three habitats and created a poster demonstrating ways to protect and sustain the habitats of the creatures that live there. Once the posters were completed, each student had the opportunity to share their poster and ideas with their peers. It was wonderful to see the students showing great awareness of protecting animal habitats.

They also explored what animals need to survive. Animals need water, food, space and shelter. The Preps worked in pairs and chose a familiar pet. They brainstormed what their pet needs to survive.
