Science Week – Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All

For Science Week this year, Waverley Meadows Primary School explored the fascinating world of seeds! Across the school, students investigated what a seed is, how seeds develop and grow, and the different ways seeds are dispersed. They also observed and investigated how plants and other living things have grown throughout our school yard.

In SAKG, students got their hands dirty planting spring seeds into newspaper pots, combining science, sustainability and gardening.

Our Science Week afternoon on Thursday gave every class the opportunity to participate in a hands-on Seeds of Science activity:

 Preps made caterpillars from recycled cardboard and planted marigold seeds.

 1/2s had a wonderful time creating Kokedama, traditional Japanese moss balls, while learning about plants and how they grow.

 3/4s investigated the science behind making snowflakes, exploring patterns, shapes and the science of crystallisation.

5s made seed sticks using recycled paper, creating a sustainable way to plant seeds.

6s worked together to create an incredible 120 seed bombs using wildflower seeds, ready to help bring more colour and biodiversity to our environment.

It was a fantastic afternoon of science, creativity, sustainability and hands-on learning, with students discovering that science really is all around us – even in a tiny seed!
