Year 5/6 News
Sean and Precious
Welcome back to all our students and families for what promises to be an exciting and productive and long Term 4! It has been wonderful to see students return ready to engage in their learning, challenge themselves and continue building on the progress they have made throughout the year. Our students have been embracing rigorous learning experiences across the curriculum, demonstrating curiosity, perseverance and a willingness to tackle new challenges.
We have been exploring How to Bee by Bren MacDibble, engaging with the text’s characters, themes and language choices. During our Language and Literacy sessions, students have been investigating modality and how authors use language to influence meaning, strengthen opinions and create variety in their writing. We have also been delving into morphology and exploring Latin and Greek roots to deepen our understanding of word meanings and build our vocabulary.

Students have been working hard to develop their understanding of perimeter and area, applying their knowledge to solve a range of problems. We have also explored prime, composite, square and triangular numbers, alongside interpreting and analysing line graphs. Students have been encouraged to explain their thinking, apply strategies and persevere when faced with challenging problems.

Our focus has been on the science of water. Students have investigated water filtration and explored how different materials can be used to separate impurities from water. A highlight has been designing and constructing their own filtration systems using materials collected from around our school grounds. This hands-on learning has encouraged students to experiment, think critically and apply scientific understanding to real-world challenges.

We are exploring some important and sensitive topics relating to gender and identity. Students have approached these discussions with impressive maturity, empathy and resilience, contributing thoughtfully and demonstrating respect for different perspectives and experiences. We recognise that these topics can be complex and may bring up a range of emotions for some students. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support as we navigate these conversations together, helping students feel safe, respected and supported both at school and at home. More information will be shared in our weekly Compass newsfeed posts to families throughout the term.
We look forward to a fantastic final term filled with meaningful learning, personal growth and opportunities for students to celebrate their achievements. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership throughout the year!
