Dear Foundation Families,
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing break and is feeling refreshed for another exciting term of learning. Over the past three weeks, students have been settling back into classroom routines, building on their existing knowledge and developing new skills across the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn as we begin our final term of Foundation!
This term, we are exploring how authors use different features to make stories engaging and meaningful. Students have been investigating how the layout of words can show movement, how imagination brings stories to life and how illustrations help us understand and interpret a text. We have also been strengthening our comprehension skills by exploring characters' intentions, discussing their actions and identifying how characters use persuasion. Students are learning to recognise persuasive language, consider different perspectives.
Our writing focus this term is on developing persuasive writing skills. Students are learning to express their opinions clearly and support their ideas with reasons. We have also been exploring what makes a complete sentence, distinguishing between sentences and fragments, and identifying how nouns, verbs and adjectives work together to create meaningful sentences. These skills will help students expand their ideas and become more confident writers.

We began Term 4 by exploring addition, using hands-on materials, drawings and visual representations to combine groups and find totals. Students have been applying their understanding to simple word problems and using number lines to represent addition and count forwards. We have encouraged students to experiment with different strategies and explain how they arrived at their answers. We have since begun exploring subtraction, using concrete materials, counting backwards and number stories to investigate how quantities change and how many objects remain when some are taken away.

Our new Inquiry unit focuses on animals and their habitats. Students have been investigating the features of different animals, identifying similarities and differences, and grouping animals according to their characteristics. We have explored features such as body coverings, the number of legs. We are now extending our learning by investigating animal life cycles and how animals grow and change over time.

We enjoyed a fun-filled Sports Day, where students rotated through a variety of activities and had the opportunity to showcase their skills. It was wonderful to see everyone participating, challenging themselves and encouraging their classmates. The day was a great opportunity to practise teamwork, develop coordination and, most importantly, enjoy being active together!
