Year 5/6 News

Year 5

Literacy:

This fortnight in Literacy, we have explored the text “Looking After Country with Fire”, it is a book told through the eyes of an Aboriginal Elder about how to take care of our native land. Students made many predictions about the text prior to reading. Once we read the story, we have learnt the ways in which Indigenous Australians care for our land. Students have explored the vocabulary throughout the text and from there, they have had to research what the word means as well as the different synonyms for the word.

In Week 3, we explored the topic of 3D Objects. Students looked at the characteristics of 3D objects as well as their nets and items in which they can think of which may fit into the 3D object. In Week 4, we have just started learning about decimals. We are working in different Maths groups so that we are all challenged and learning new skills in this area of Numeracy.

In English, the Year Sixes have been reading Once by Morris Gleitzman. To help with this, they have been practicing note-taking with symbols and have been extending their sentences using appositives and relative clauses.

Numeracy:

Students have been exploring 3-D shapes. They have been describing the features of 3-D shapes - edges, faces (surfaces for cones, cylinders and spheres) and vertices for cylinders, spheres, prisms, pyramids and platonic solids. Students learned to identify and sort right prisms based on their cross-sections.

Wellbeing 5/6

In Wellbeing, we have completed an Inform and Empower Session which focused on the balance between screen time and green time. We have discussed ways in which we can balance this and the appropriate times when we should be on our screens and when to go outdoors.

Sustainability

Hello everyone, we are the Sustainability team and we just want to talk about gardening club, Mother’s day pots and the upcoming competition to reduce waste.

Gardening club

In the gardening club lots of enthusiastic people from different year levels came down to the garden where they planted plants and pulls out weeds. Everyone is showing core values and being supportive to one another in the garden. Winter is now approaching soon and we are making garden beds for the winter plants. Everyone who participates in gardening club is really engaged.

 Mother’s day

On Mother's day the garden pots and plants stall was very popular and very successful. Everyone was really excited to buy the plants and at the end we managed to sell about 70 plants. Thank you for every person who brought plants as the money is going back into the school. We hope that everyone is taking nice care of their plants they brought from the stall.

Upcoming Competition

In this photo we are holding a new trophy that will be awarded to the Learning Centre with the best sustainability rubbish habits along with a prize of a fun afternoon to celebrate. There is more information to come for this next newsletter.

Geography Excursion

Our excursion, commencing and finishing at Federation Square explored the changing geographic and urban characteristics of Melbourne places including the Yarra River, Birrarung Marr to the Hoddle Grid and iconic Melbourne buildings including locations such as Flinders Station, Sandridge Bridge, Eureka tower and others. It included how Melbourne’s geography was utilised and even changed over time by communities: Indigenous people, colonists, immigrants and contemporary society. Our students conducted themselves in line with our school values and were complimented on their behaviour by the tour operators as well as passerbys.
