Year 3/4 News

Year 3

We have been settling in well to our new learning spaces and enjoying doing lots of activities together as a year level. We have celebrated Mothers Day by creating cards and pots and enjoyed getting to have many of our mothers join us. We have also been on our first excursion for the year. Our students all greatly enjoyed catching trains and experiencing the museum.

Religion

In religion we have been looking at parables in the bible. They have been finding and reading several parables and then discussing their purpose and their understanding of the meaning. Our students have enjoyed doing some creative tasks to try and experience the metaphors told in the parables.

Literacy

In literacy we have continued looking through Matilda and our students have continued to enjoy reading through the story together and practicing their reading skills with partner and independent reading. Our students have also been practicing their writing skills by looking at sentence types, and how to expand their writing with conjunctions. They have enjoyed showing their understanding by writing and typing creative pieces about various pictures.

Maths

In Maths we have been continuing our work in multiplication and division. We have been creating arrays and relating them to multiplication and division facts using grouping, skip counting and repeated addition. Students have been working on making connections between multiplication and division and identifying patterns for multiples of different numbers.

Inquiry

In inquiry we have been exploring Australia's history by looking through videos from the My Place series. Our students have been engaging in discussions about Indigenous Australian Peoples’ culture, history and the impact of colonisation. Our students enjoyed visiting the Melbourne Museum, looking at historical artefacts, and discussing events throughout history. They will be continuing to look at different events in Australian history over the term.

They made their banners with the help of Tian, Anthony, Anna and Abby to create their designs using different symbols to represent the Eucharist. Whilst the other students were creating their own booklet displaying different symbols associated with the Eucharist. The students have also explored the scripture of the Road to Emmaus and the link between it and the mass.

Inquiry

Over the last few weeks the students have continued to work through the OLSC design process of define, ideate, prototype and evaluate. Looking at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings in Australia, USA and Asia to see who has the best design.

On Thursday the 14th of May all the year 4 students took part in a STEM day at school where they worked in groups to define, ideate, prototype and evaluate. Their problem was to update the school's senior playground. The students all had lots of fun and creativity flowed with some of their ideas for what the new playground could look like. Some of the ideas were a zipline, climbing wall, quiet space, spinning tops, thermal hot springs, a coke fountain, tree house just to name a few. They all worked so well in their groups and it was amazing to see all the students have so much fun being creative and hands on.
