Year 1/2 News

Fatima Centre
We have now reached Week 4, and it has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm students are bringing to their learning. Learning spaces have been buzzing with curiosity, thoughtful questions, and active participation as students explore new ideas and build their skills. It has been fantastic to see how engaged everyone has been, showing excitement for learning and pride in their work. Thank you to our families for your continued support.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry, students have been exploring Chemical Science through a range of exciting hands-on experiments. Over the past two weeks, students have completed a Skittles experiment, observing the rainbow colours transform, a fizzing balloon experiment using vinegar and baking soda, and created Oobleck by following a step-by-step recipe. Students also explored a colourful milk experiment using milk, detergent, cotton tips and food colouring. Students observed how the detergent reacted with the fat in the milk, causing the colours to move and swirl around the plate.
The children are thoroughly enjoying being scientists, making predictions and forming hypotheses during our investigations!
Literacy:
In Literacy, students explored the story Rosie Revere, Engineer and discussed the question, “What do you think an engineer is?” Students shared their ideas and made connections to the important role engineers play in designing and creating. We also read The Most Magnificent Thing and discussed the perseverance and problem-solving shown throughout the story. Students then began creating a story map using the story grammar icons introduced in Week 2 with Iggy Peck, Architect.
Maths:
In Mathematics, students have also been investigating measurement. Students have been comparing, ordering and measuring objects using informal units, while developing their understanding of how accurate and consistent measurements are made. Throughout these activities, students have been encouraged to explain their thinking through hands-on activities.
Religion:
In Religion, Students engaged in a Godly Play experience exploring the story of the Road to Emmaus, encouraging discussion, wondering and reflection. Students also created an art piece based on the Resurrection. Students first sketched their drawings in grey lead before painting their final artwork. This activity encouraged students to reflect creatively on the story and its meaning.
