Literacy

What have we been learning in our Literacy lessons at OLSC?
Prep - The Prep students have been focusing on writing simple sentences with the sounds they have been learning in Little Learners Love Literacy. The Prep teachers have been reading some of the decodable LLLL books to the class, and the students have used the words and sounds in these books to write their own sentences. The focus has also been on including a capital letter to begin a sentence and a full stop to end it.
Year 1/2s - Over the last two weeks, the 1/2 students have been reading books about designing like an architect and not giving up when things don't go according to plan. They have been learning about the parts of a narrative: characters, setting, problems and solutions.
Year 3s - This past fortnight, the students in Year 3 have continued reading 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl for their novel study. Through writing, they have focused on four different types of sentences: statement, question, command and exclamation. In the lead up to Mother's Day, the Year 3 teachers shared the book 'My Mum is the Best!' by Nic McPickle and asked the children to reflect on why their Mum is the best.
Year 4s - Our Year 4 students have been continuing their novel study of the book 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown and they are thoroughly enjoying the story of Roz the robot. While reading, students are learning many new and interesting words to add to their vocabulary. In the last few chapters, words like pamper, trudging, hoisted and withered have been a focus for the Year 4s.
Year 5s - The Year 5 students have shifted their focus in Literacy to make links through texts to their Geography Inquiry topic. For the last two weeks, they have been reading 'Looking After Country With Fire' by Victor Steffenson. Through this book, students have learned about how the First Nations' people use fire to care for Country and help to rejuvenate their surroundings by burning slowly and at the right time of year.
Year 6s - The Year 6 students have begun their second novel study for the year. They are reading 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman, a novel that centres around a young Jewish boy named Felix who lives in Poland during the Holocaust. To better understand the significant historical and geographical events connected to this book, students have also been reading information about the country of Poland.

Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge is well underway, and the students at OLSC have hit the ground running with their reading. So far, we have read 1821 books, and 22 students have already completed the Challenge.
The Challenge finishes in September, so there is plenty of time for everyone to join in and reach their target. If your child isn't sure of their username and password, please see their teacher or email me at the address below.
