Belmont High School Maths Club

Monday Lunchtimes – LC9 and LC11

To support our students in developing their Maths skills and curiosity about Maths careers and real-world applications, we will run lunchtime Maths Club sessions from Monday 5th of May. All students are welcome, whether they want to extend themselves with more open-ended Maths problems, or if they just want to clarify some of their homework tasks. BHS Maths Staff will be on hand to support and challenge Year 7 to 9 students in LC9 and Year 10 to 12 students in LC11.

One of our focuses will be a Monthly Math Club Competition – kicking off with a “Calculate the Approximate Number of Lollies in a Jar” competition in the month of May. Students will have an opportunity to look at a glass jar of lollies and calculate how many lollies they think it contains. Entrants can show their working and submit it at Maths Club, and whoever gets closest will walk away with the goods! This is a type of “Fermi question” – a problem with an impossible or difficult to find answer. This is a great way to challenge student thinking and the concept that Maths problems always have one right solution.
