Book of the Week
Red star rebels
by Amie Kaufman
It’s 2067 and Mars has been colonised. Rich and powerful corporations are building bases and mining for valuable resources on the red planet, in constant competition with each other. 17-year-old Hunter is the heir to GravesUP, the biggest company on Mars (and Earth), and he’s just arrived at UN station Pax when it is evacuated. In the confusion, he is left behind – stranded on a deserted base and unable to reach help. Coming to his rescue is 16-year-old Cleo, a stowaway and misfit on the run from debt-collectors back on Earth. When a group of armed mercenaries enter the station, Cleo and Hunter face a dilemma – try to escape and get to another base, hand themselves in, or try to disrupt the bad guys’ plans – and possibly die in the process.
Cleo and Hunter come from vastly different worlds, and trust doesn’t come easily to either of them, but they quickly realise that having each other’s backs no matter what happens may be the only way to survive. I really enjoyed the intellect and originality of the main characters, and how they faced every challenge thrown at them. Red star rebels is an action-packed sci-fi adventure with something for everyone – including a bit of romance – and will leave you wanting more from this future world of Mars.
