KOKODA LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Fundraising Efforts & Departure Approaching
Excitement is continuing to build as Belmont High School students prepare for the upcoming Kokoda Leadership Trek, departing on June 1st, 2026.
A group of 13 Belmont High School students, accompanied by Mr Hosking and Ms McKenzie, will take on the challenging and rewarding Kokoda Track experience alongside students from Western Heights College. The 9-day trek will provide students with a unique opportunity to develop leadership, resilience, teamwork and a deeper understanding of the historical significance of Kokoda.
In preparation for the trek, students have shown outstanding commitment over recent months. Training has included after-school fitness sessions at school, training hikes, and lots of individual training sessions. Students have been working hard to build their fitness, strength and mental resilience to ensure they are ready for the physical and emotional challenges of the track.
Our Kokoda team has also demonstrated tremendous initiative and teamwork through fundraising efforts. Last term, students hosted a BBQ fundraiser during our Open Evening, helping to raise $988.72 to support PNG communities who live along the track. Students worked together preparing, cooking and serving food throughout the evening while engaging positively with families and members of the school community. Thank you to all students and families for your support and efforts with this initiative.
The Kokoda Trek represents much more than a physical challenge. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate Belmont High School’s core values of Respect, Opportunity and Resilience while creating lifelong memories and connections.
We would like to thank all families and community members who have supported the students throughout their preparation journey so far. We look forward to sharing updates and photos from the trek in the coming weeks.
LEADER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Hello I’m Braydn of 11 Gold. I attended Defence work experience at RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) base Edinburgh in South Australia from the 17th of November to the 20th of November 2025 and at RAAF base Amberley in Queensland from the 23rd of March to the 25th of March 2026.
During these work experiences I spent lots of time around military aircraft of all types and their aircrew personnel while learning about what each role within defence holds and how life looks as a defence member. While on these experiences I got firsthand experience of what it means to be a leader by leading a small group to complete difficult tasks, whether it be navigating an area while blindfolded or having to construct a Lego set one handed and having to communicate with each other through confusion and distraction.
What stood out to me over these work experience placements was just how amazing everyone's jobs were, whether they were a pilot, Weapon System Officer, or an Engineer. Everyone enjoyed their jobs and it was amazing to see how every role works together to create an efficient and effective network.
And the program deepened my decision on joining the RAAF as a pilot after my time at Belmont. Undertaking these programs will help with my application to the ADF by showing dedication and desire for joining.
