Pre-Primary Lorikeets and Possums
Religious Education
In Religious Education we have been learning about what it means to be a good friend. We have had lots of discussions about what a good friend looks like and simple ways to show kindness every day at school. We have brainstormed ways to be kind, just like Jesus!
English
This term the Pre-Primary students have really worked hard on their reading and writing skills. Not only have they been having a go at completing their ‘On the weekend..,’ writing independently but they have also begun using their letter sound knowledge and high frequency words to aid them in doing this. They have participated in small group guided reading with great success, sounding words and recognising some simple high frequency words from sight.
The students have learnt many new high frequency words, even some with tricky digraphs like sh, th and ch. They have also enjoyed reading a multitude of books, discussing their characters, settings and events and getting immersed in the enjoyment of reading.
In Talk For Writing the children started by learning and innovating the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. They are now beginning to work on a fictional recount of ‘My Journey up the Beanstalk’.
Maths
In Mathematics we have been working hard on many new concepts. We have been learning about the properties of 2D shapes and sorting shapes based on attributes.
We have also had lots of fun drawing and making shapes with different materials.
We have been learning how to share objects into equal groups and learning what the word equal means. We have had lots of practise with hands on materials and even shared some pretend cookies with teddies at a teddy bear picnic!
HASS
In HASS this term our focus in on our community and mapping. We began by looking at the different places in our local community of Ellenbrook. We discussed which places are natural and which are built. We spent a lot of time exploring what makes a community, looking at maps and creating our own communities using different types or construction materials and loose parts. We discussed what places are essential in a community as we drew a large map together. Next, we are going to explore the map with Beebots (simple coding robots), as well as having a go at drawing our own maps.
To tie in with our work on communities our dramatic play centres have included an Ice-Cream Shop and a Pizza Shop this term.
Design Technology
We read the story 'Not a Box' for Design Technology and brainstormed some interesting things that a regular box could be turned into. We then planned what we would like to make and used recycled materials to make our very own creations. We are very pleased with the end results and we were very imaginative!
Sustainable Cities Incursion
We were very fortunate last week to participate in a sustainable cities incursion run by The Nature Seekers. During this incursion we upcycled materials to create different things. Some of us made sustainable houses and green spaces while others made vehicles and wind powered boats. The catch was that we were not allowed to use tape or glue. It was challenging, but all children successfully created something by upcycling materials and learned the importance of reduce, reuse and recycle, rather than just putting our rubbish straight into landfill.
Year 3 Magpies and Numbats
Term Three has been a hands‑on learning journey for our Year Three students. They have shown wonderful enthusiasm, teamwork and creativity, and we are so proud of the effort they bring into the classroom each day.
Literacy
Book Week was a highlight of the term! Students arrived dressed as their favourite book characters and created character profiles of the characters they dressed up as, describing personality traits and key events from their stories. This activity helped strengthen comprehension skills and encouraged students to think deeply about how authors build memorable characters.
To celebrate Father’s Day, students made rocky road. They measured, mixed, stirred, and carefully assembled their treats before taking them home. It was a messy and memorable activity that combined perfectly with our procedural recount writing also.
Religious Education
In Religioous Education, we explored how we can follow the example of St Helena in our everyday lives. Students discussed the qualities she showed and reflected on simple ways they can bring these values into our classroom and playground.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been learning about arrays and how they help us understand repeated addition and multiplication. Students used their knowledge to design Array Cities. This hands-on project helped students visualise number patterns and have fun designing their own skyline.
HASS
In HASS, we explored the geography of Australia, learning about each state and territory, their capital cities, and key landmarks. Students enjoyed locating places on maps, comparing regions, and discussing the diversity of our country.
