Scuba diving trip
Dear ECP community, we are Adela and Bara, the Student Council co-presidents for this academic year. This year marks an exciting new chapter for ECP as the whole school comes together on one site for the first time in years, and we are very grateful to be leading the Student Council through it. Making sure every part of this community feels heard and represented is at the heart of everything we do. We have had a wonderful start to the term and are already busy working on initiatives we hope will make a real difference to life at ECP. The first being the Year 3 and 4 career fair, which will take place on the 24th of November. This event will further aid the students in their career planning, which is particularly important in the pre-IB years. Furthermore, there will be a Christmas fair, where the students will be able to participate in games and activities, while enjoying final moments with friends prior to the winter holidays. We look forward to sharing more as the year unfolds.

On Monday 5 October, together with many others across the Czech Republic, the English College in Prague gathered to remember Václav Havel. Not only was he the first democratic President of Czechoslovakia, he was also ECP’s first Founder Patron. In fact, it was Havel who personally invited the then HRH Prince Charles to join him in supporting our school.

To mark what would have been Havel’s 90th birthday, we held a special ceremony to unveil striking black-and-white photographic portraits of our three Patrons. Pride of place naturally belonged to Václav Havel, as we celebrated what would have been his 90th birthday. Read more here:

The Year 4s were given an absolute treat on Tuesday 22nd September when Professor Tomáš Vejchodský from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University visited the college to give a lecture on the circle. The talk started in Syracuse, Sicily, where he described how Archimedes used polygons of increasing sides to come up with an impressively accurate estimation for π. He then showed the cohort some of the very important proofs that allowed mathematicians to extend the workings of Archimedes into an equally succinct and beautiful formula for the computation of π. Professor Vejchodský finished by linking this to the modern-day applications of π and the research that he is involved in during his daily university life. We look forward to more collaboration with both him and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in the near future.
Mr Tognini, Head of Mathematics

“A small circle is quite as infinite as a large circle...” G. K. Chesterton
“Do not disturb my circles!” Archimedes
“Circular movement is the most perfect, for it is continuous and has neither beginning nor end.” Aristotle
“The life of man is a self-evolving circle, which, from a ring imperceptibly small, rushes on all sides outwards to new and larger circles, and that without end.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Every academic year at the English College in Prague has an overarching theme that ties into all school events, competitions, and charitable initiatives. This year’s theme, The Circle, offers countless possibilities, and our students have already put forward some fantastic ideas.
We have an exciting series of lectures ahead exploring the circle of life, the circular economy, and vicious circles. Keynote speakers will touch upon the theme as early as Founders’ Day, and it will also serve as the creative catalyst for the Cultural Olympiad. It is always fascinating to see the witty, imaginative ways students interpret each annual theme. Naturally, the traditional Czech literary competition will also feature the circle as its central prompt. I am confident that the students will take the initiative with many of these activities themselves - circle dancing, shared readings from The Lord of the Rings, or storytelling around King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table would all be wonderful additions.
At the close of the school year, we hope to host another community event - last year’s heart-themed one turned out to be a great success! One proposal is to form a human circle to hug our new school building, which would be a fitting and memorable way to conclude our exploration of the circle and celebrate the first year in our new home.
