The Growing Up series
At Beaumaris Secondary, many stories and conversations live deep within the books on our library shelves which now include the complete collection of the Growing Up series. This series was acquired for our collection with a view to students reading and thinking more deeply about their own identity and the world around them.
Titles in the complete collection published by Black Inc and written by various authors include:
- Growing Up Asian in Australia
- Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia
- Growing Up African in Australia
- Growing Up Queer in Australia
- Growing Up Disabled in Australia
- Growing Up Country in Australia
- Growing Up in Australia
In Growing Up Asian in Australia, students will read about the challenges of living between two cultures — trying to fit in at school while honouring family traditions at home. In Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia, students will read about racism, pride, and cultural connection. Each story is unique, yet together they show how diverse and complex growing up can be.
These stories can feel like a mirror, reflecting your own voice and background and seeing it represented in literature can be incredibly empowering, a reminder that you are not alone.
These books don’t offer answers, but they offer understanding, and it is these conversations that are important throughout the teenage years when students are still figuring out who they are….
We’ve Got You Covered!
A big thank you to our parent volunteers who have given up their time to help cover our growing collection of books in our school library.
Here in the library, we understand life can get busy for parents and so to make things easier, a box of books can be collected from reception ready to cover in the warmth of your own home! Every box counts so please email Niamh in the library at 7566-library@schools.vic.edu.au to organise your box for pick up. Thank you!
