Principal's Report

As we continue our journey through Term 2, I am pleased to share some updates on the initiatives and opportunities that support our students' growth and wellbeing.
Curriculum Day
Last week, we held a very productive Curriculum Day for our staff, focusing on enhancing teaching practices and professional growth. Teachers engaged in sessions that explored explicit teaching, checking for understanding and data-driven instruction. They examined how the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 connects to our instructional model and participated in workshops on the Gradual Release of Responsibility. Teachers also analysed various data sets. Sincere thanks to Deb Kirk for her outstanding facilitation of the day.
Staffing Update
We are pleased to welcome Fern Hughes to our college as a Tutor.
Mathematical Methods Tutoring & Senior Centre Study
It is wonderful to see so many of our Year 12 Mathematical Methods students making the most of the afterschool tutoring sessions offered on Thursday afternoons (3.15 - 4.15pm) with Peter Corkill (John Monash Science School Foundation Principal). Peter’s generosity with his time and expertise provides invaluable support, helping students strengthen their understanding of this challenging subject.
It's also great to see our Year 12 students taking advantage of the Senior Centre, which is available to them from 8am - 5pm for private and collaborative study, and how well they are looking after their Study Spaces and the Senior Lounge.
Year 10 & 11 Exams and GAT
As we approach the examination period (10 - 13 June), I encourage our Year 10 and 11 students to schedule appropriate study time as part of their home learning routine.
Students have been given time for exam preparation and revision in their classes and Elevate Education ran their Study Sensei workshop for our Year 11 students during their Beyond session.
All students enrolled in a VCE 3/4 study will undertake the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Tuesday 17 June.
Please note that the Canteen will be closed on Tuesday 17 June to minimise disruption.
Parent Information Evenings
Thank you to the families who joined us for the Toolbox Education 'Thinking Traps' online Parent Workshop last night. The session provided valuable tools to help parents support their children in navigating unhelpful thinking patterns. It was an informative workshop where participants learned how to identify anxious thoughts, challenge negative thinking styles, and support their children using evidence-based strategies.
Our next online Parent Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 4 June at 6.30pm. This session, hosted by Lea Waters PhD, will showcase the Visible Wellbeing approach that we use here at Beaumaris and share practical strategies that parents can use to support their children's wellbeing at home.
We appreciate the engagement and support from our community in these important learning opportunities.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week 2025 will be held from Tuesday 27 May to Tuesday 3 June. The theme this year, ‘Bridging now to next’, reflects ongoing connection (between past, present and future) and encourages us to move forward together, guided by past lessons to build a more united and respectful nation. The start and end of National Reconciliation Week recognises two significant milestones: the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision.
For more information, visit the National Reconciliation Week website.
Chelsea Bicentennial Parkrun, Connor's Run & Push-Up Challenge
I am looking forward to seeing many of our families at our annual Parkrun for House points, which will be held at Chelsea Bicentennial Park this Saturday!
I also encourage everyone to join the BSC teams for Connor's Run and the Push-Up Challenge. Not only do events like these support wonderful causes, but they also promote physical wellbeing and foster bonds that connect us as a community.
Shining Bright for Holly and Bianca
We had a big weekend with commemorations and fundraising for Holly and Bianca on 24 & 25 May, including the football games at Beaumaris Football Club and the Shining Bright Luncheon at the Sandringham Yacht Club. I attended the games, as well as the luncheon, alongside Andy Farrow, Liam Walsh and Debby Chaves. A large number of alumni and families were present, and much of the work leading up to the day, as well as the activities on the day, was coordinated by some of our wonderful alumni. It was inspiring to witness the strength and resilience of these young people as they honour Holly and Bianca and move forward from the heartbreaking events of last year.
