Clayfield College Sports Celebration Dinner
Monday 19 October | The Rose Room, Cloudland
The 2026 Clayfield College Sports Celebration Dinner brought students, families, coordinators, coaches and staff together at Cloudland to celebrate a year of achievement, growth and connection. With our athletes’ names proudly displayed on the media wall, the evening placed our students at the heart of the celebration, recognising both their performances and the contributions they make to College sport.
Reflecting Dr Cousins’ message to “Keep getting stronger. Keep getting wiser”, the evening explored what growth through sport truly means. Strength develops through commitment, persistence and the courage to try again. Wisdom comes from learning through disappointment, recognising the people who support us and understanding how our actions affect those around us.
Throughout 2026, our students gave us many reasons to celebrate:
- Artistic Gymnastics: As hosts of the 60th QGSSSA Artistic Gymnastics Championships, Clayfield celebrated Premierships in Open, A, B and C Grades, second place in D Grade and the Year 7 Premierships pennant; the College’s first in a decade.
- Tennis: Our QGSSSA Open team secured an undefeated Premiership, with Senior A and Junior A both finishing third.
- Basketball and Hockey: An undefeated QGSSSA Basketball campaign and a Senior Division 1 Hockey season featuring seven wins from eight matches reflected sustained commitment and teamwork.
- Boys’ Sport: Our Under 14 basketballers claimed a Premiership, Under 18 Green finished runners-up following an overtime grand final, and our Under 14 Green touch football team also achieved a runners-up finish. The introduction of futsal created another opportunity for boys to represent the College.
Alongside these results were stories of growing confidence and belonging. Our coeducational Mountain Biking program continued to attract interest, giving students opportunities to challenge themselves, build friendships and discover what they are capable of. For students such as Lily A and Oliver S, the value extended well beyond the race itself.
These experiences reflect the culture developing across Clayfield College Sport: one in which students can find their place, contribute to a team and help shape traditions for those who follow.
That spirit was especially evident at the QGSSSA Athletics Championships. Feedback from a spectator recognised our students’ joy, camaraderie and sportsmanship, captured in the singing and dancing that brought Clayfield and Brisbane State High students together after competition. It was a meaningful reminder that the way we compete, support others and celebrate together leaves a lasting impression.
We were delighted to welcome guest speakers Sam Laidlow and Milán Agnew, whose reflections offered insight into the commitment, setbacks and support behind life as professional athletes. Their experiences reinforced the evening’s message: progress takes patience, resilience and a willingness to keep learning.
The evening also recognised the people whose service sustains our sporting community. A new award honouring Rae Morris acknowledged her many years of contribution through Friends of Sport and the P&F, and the lasting value of giving generously to others.
Our 2026 Sports Captains, Hayley C and Reese T, reflected on their year of leadership and welcomed Matilda W and Skye W as the 2027 Sports Captains, ready to build on the spirit and traditions entrusted to them.
Thank you to our coaches, coordinators, staff, Friends of Sport, parents and supporters for the time, care and belief you invest in our students. Above all, thank you to our students for your effort, your enthusiasm and the pride you bring to representing Clayfield College.
As we celebrated 2026, the message was clear: every challenge, every lesson and every act of encouragement gives us an opportunity to keep getting stronger and wiser together.
