Our Grade 1 students enjoyed a wonderful “Then and Now” incursion where they explored what school and home life was like in Melbourne 150 years ago. Students learned about how children lived and learned in the past and compared it to life today. A highlight of the day was using ink and dip pens to practise writing the alphabet, which the students absolutely loved! It was a fun and engaging way to experience history and bring learning to life.

In Mathematics, our Grade 1 students have been practising a range of important number skills. Students have been learning to skip count confidently and use number bonds to help solve subtraction problems. They have also been exploring place value facts by identifying one more, one less, ten more and ten less with different numbers. These activities are helping students build strong number knowledge and confidence with maths skills.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), our Grade 1 students explored what it means to be a good friend. Together, students discussed what a good friend looks like, sounds like and feels like. They shared ideas about using kind words, listening carefully, helping others and making everyone feel included and valued.

In Applied Literacy, students have been learning about procedural texts by following and writing step-by-step instructions. As part of this learning, students carefully listened to and followed the steps on how to draw a puppy. They enjoyed creating their drawings while practising their listening and sequencing skills.

Our Grade 1 students have been practising lining up in SHAPE by showing safe, helpful and respectful behaviours. Students have been working together to line up quietly, listen carefully to instructions and move safely around the school. We are proud of the positive teamwork and responsibility they are showing each day.

Grade 2 students have been having lots of fun playing Sounds Write games. These engaging activities help students recognise sounds, blend words together, and build confidence in their reading and spelling skills.

We have been practising regrouping to help us with subtraction problems. We have also been learning how to read and write 3 and 4 digit numbers.

Students have been learning about our place in space as part of our Earth Science studies. We can now confidently tell you the names of all the planets in the solar system and the relationship between Earth, the Moon and the Sun and how Earth rotates on its axis to cause day and night. Have you taken a look at the moon tonight? Is it waxing, wanning, a full moon or new moon?

Grade 1 students have been exploring capacity by using informal units of measure through hands on pouring activities with sand. Students practised comparing and measuring how much different containers could hold using cups of sand. These engaging activities helped students develop their understanding of full, empty, more, and less while building their confidence in measuring, estimating, and predicting capacity.

An important part of our Literacy Program is handwriting practice. We practise our letter formation and sizing.
