Principal's Message

Dear Sunshine Heights Parents and Carers,
Next week from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th of June we have our 5/6 Camp to Marysville. School camps are a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in a program of activities outside the school context that builds independence and enhances connections with teachers and peers.
Increasingly, we find that children have limited exposure to risk-taking in safe, securely supervised environments, and school camps provide the perfect setting for children to push their personal boundaries while supportive structures are in place.
Activites such as the flying fox, low ropes and raft building allow students to work collaboratively and creatively to problem solve. There is also an atmosphere of encouragement and positive reinforcement between staff and students that helps promote self-esteem and a sense of achievement.
The social aspect of camp is also significant, and the experience of living in shared cabins and sharing meals together is fundamental to developing interpersonal skills and a sense of belonging.
Finally, the necessary jobs and responsibilities that are designated to students before and during camp, such as setting the dining room for dinner, helping on kitchen duty or cleaning the cabins, are life skills learned in real time with a backdrop of laughter and excitement.
We wish all our campers a wonderful three days at Marysville, and can't wait to hear the stories when they return. For those 3/4 parents still interested in our camp at Port Phillip in term 3, we still have places available, and we would love to take more children.
Best wishes,
Sunny Heights Leadership Team
