Physical Education News

Dear Tarneit Rise Primary School Families and Friends

Welcome back to another action-packed PE newsletter! The students have been working very hard this term, and as we come to crunch time, they are really shining!

Student Shoutout

This week's shoutout goes to the Grade 6 Gala Day teams! Students competed in Softball, Volleyball, Soccer, AFL 9s, and Netball. Our girls' teams in all 5 sports finished first and are through to the divisions, as did our boys' softball team. Our other mixed/boys' teams also gave it a great go and made the school proud!

We would also like to shout out Chloe from 6C and Gurman from 6D on reaching Western Metro Regionals for cross country. We wish them both the best, and we’re excited to see how they go!

Preps - Grade 2

Our Junior year grades have been working very hard learning the skill of bouncing. All three grades have been working on their single-handed bounce with a basketball. We have been focusing on protecting the ball with our bodies, and have been using our spider hands to control the ball. By bending and straightening our elbows, we have been able to maintain a controlled bounce and move with the ball.

Grade 3

Grade 3s have been focusing on honing their European handball skills. They have been focusing on creating a numerical advantage as well as learning new ways to get around a defender using dribbling techniques.

Grade 4

Grade 4s have started their soccer unit by focusing on their passing and dribbling. Last week, we focused on dribbling to control the ball while moving up the field. This week, we have focused on our instep and moving into space.

Grade 5

Grade 5s have been introduced to Australian Rules Football, where they have started by learning the passing skill of handballing. Students have been focusing on scooping the ball and striking the top side of it to make it spin backward, as well as some of the rules that help the game run smoothly.

Grade 6

Grade 6 students have been playing the game of Tag Rugby. The focus has been staying onside and moving with the line, as well as positioning to receive the ball when on offense. They have been focusing on having their hands ready in a ‘W position,’ which will help them to control the larger ball.

Team of the Week

Team of the week is a starting 11 of students who have shown the school values in all areas of PE. They may not always be the most talented, but they have the best attitudes and eagerness to learn when it comes to PE.

Athletics

Over the past year, we’ve continued to grow the Next Athletics program across Victoria in schools, athletics clubs, and leisure centers. We are currently offering an after-school program in Altona, at the Little Athletics Club venue. The term program is run on Mondays beginning next week on Monday, 27th April, 3:45-4:45.

We are also running a Term Two promotion for this program at a reduced rate of just $15/session to make it more inclusive for families.
