Grade 6 Community News

Dear Grade 6 families,

Term 2 sure has turned out to be a busy one! Students are working tremendously hard as we consolidate our learning for the semester. It has been fantastic to see the growth across the cohort, not only in their learning but also in the growing responsibility and maturity we are seeing from students.

During Week 7, we attended the Winter Sports Gala Day, where TRPS really shone! A well-deserved congratulations to all students who competed, and an extra special mention to the following teams who came out on top for the day and will be progressing to the regional stage:

Dates for the next stage will be confirmed shortly. Students who will be attending will be notified via Compass.

English

Students in Year 6 wrapped up their recent assessments with fantastic focus and determination. With those behind us, we have jumped straight into an exciting new literacy unit focused on life stories, where students are currently in the energetic phase of gathering information for their own autobiographies. To build a strong foundation for this writing, the classes have been studying the specific chronology of biographies and practicing various planning strategies to map major life events. A major part of this process has been teaching students to become critical researchers by identifying and using reliable sources, ensuring they can cross-reference information and separate objective facts from opinion before beginning drafting.

Furthermore, daily spelling mastery sessions continue, with students focusing on advanced spelling patterns to boost their writing accuracy. Since students are actively gathering details for their autobiographies right now, this is the perfect time to share family stories at home - chatting about their early childhood milestones, funny toddler memories, or favourite family moments will give them fantastic, authentic material to build upon in class!

Maths

We have completed our unit on Probability and have now progressed to our unit on Pattern. Students are learning about number patterns and the rules that govern them. Throughout this unit, they will identify, describe, and create patterns, as well as predict what numbers will come next in a sequence. A key focus of this unit is using simple algebraic equations to record and explain pattern rules. This will help students develop their understanding of how numbers are related and build their confidence in using mathematical language and symbols to explain their thinking.

Humanities

We are continuing to learn about how Australia became a nation through Federation, and how democracy forms a crucial part of Australia’s identity. Our mock election was a success, where students were able to consolidate their understanding of Australia’s preferential voting system through a hands-on vote counting experience. As the term continues, we will explore the differing points of view of Australia’s Federation, as well as looking at other countries around the world that may share a similar history.
