Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!

We hope you enjoyed the public holiday and stayed warm in this new winter weather!

English

In English, pupils have well and truly started to unpack our novel, The Silver Donkey. In our lessons, we have discussed a variety of literary features the author uses to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. One chapter in particular, “The Front,” was incredibly vivid, almost moving some students to tears! The excellent wordplay in the novel informs our vocabulary block as we continue to expand our use of interesting, more descriptive language, both orally and in our writing. In writing, students have planned and written their first two paragraphs, their orientation and action, and will continue to develop this by adding their problem, end, and solution.

We started our Spelling through Morphographs program halfway through this term, and the pupils are doing incredibly. We are seeing considerable gains in their spelling ability and cannot wait to watch this continue to progress throughout the year.

Mathematics

Recently, grade 5 pupils finished their decimals unit and started their next topic – probability! Pupils learned about chance experiments and the theoretical probability of obtaining a desired outcome. Pupils had the opportunity to create their own chance experiments and conduct them in class. Some of their creations involved rolling dice, choosing counters from a bag, and picking cards face down. It was fascinating to see what experiments they wanted to conduct. Their latest maths topic is 2D shapes, which we are progressing through now. A reminder to please practice times tables and division facts at home whenever is best! It will only benefit the pupils going forward.

Reminders

  • iPads are charged for school every day
  • As we head into winter weather, please send students prepared with appropriate school uniform, jumpers, cardigans, and coats.
  • During this winter season, please stay vigilant for illness and follow any guidelines posted on Compass by our school nurse.
  • Please be sure to check the details on Compass for our Term 3 excursion to Sovereign Hill. There is still plenty of time left to pay for it (the last day of this term is the deadline). We would love for all of our pupils to make it, so please get in contact with the school if you need support.
