Grade 2 Community News

EMP (Explicit Maths Program)
Over the past fortnight, Grade 2 students have been learning to read and write 4-digit numbers. They have been developing their understanding of constructing 2D models from memory and photographs through a range of hands-on activities, discussions, and problem-solving tasks.
Students are also continuing to strengthen their recall of multiplication. Daily fluency practice includes oral warm-ups and a timed activity where students work to improve both speed and accuracy. These regular opportunities help build confidence and automatic recall in mathematics.
To support ongoing learning at home, students are encouraged to access Timetables Rockstars and Numbots for extra practice.
InitiaLit (Literacy)
In literacy sessions, students have been exploring a variety of comprehension and fluency strategies to help deepen their understanding of texts.
This fortnight, our focus has been on asking questions while reading texts. Students practiced asking questions to deepen their understanding while reading and discussing texts in class.
Students have also been learning about r-controlled vowels. They explored the letters ‘ir’ like bird, ‘ur’ like burn, and ‘er’ like fern, and applied this knowledge during reading and writing activities.
Alongside this, students revised the tricky words lose, father, and sister through games and interactive activities, including bubble bingo and tricky word pairs. Continued practice of these words at home is encouraged to build confidence and spelling accuracy.
Growing Grammar!
During grammar lessons, students have been learning how authors use language features to make writing more detailed and interesting for readers.
This fortnight, students explored verbs, learning that these words are doing/action words and that every sentence needs a verb to make sense.
Storybook – ‘Turtle’s Song’
Students have recently been enjoying the story Turtle’s Song. The text explores life cycles and resilience and has sparked thoughtful discussions and learning opportunities within the classroom.
As part of our vocabulary work, students added the words ‘pounds’ ‘shatter’ and ‘feast’ to our word towers and explored their meanings through class discussions and activities.
Handwriting
In handwriting sessions, students have continued developing correct letter formation and handwriting fluency.
This fortnight, the focus has been on the pothole letters y, u, and b. Students are regularly reminded to maintain correct posture, pencil grip, and letter sizing to support neat and consistent handwriting habits.
Humanities
As part of our Humanities unit on representing places, students have been investigating maps, where we live, and how we are connected through discussions, mapping activities, and classroom tasks.
Respectful Relationships
In Respectful Relationships, students have been exploring the topic of facing our fears!
Through class discussions and activities, students have been learning about facing our fears and how these skills can support positive relationships with peers, family members, and the wider community.
Students have also reflected on ways to demonstrate respect for themselves, others, and the world around them.
