Congratulations Alex, Team Vic Rugby Team

We would like to congratulate Alex Afamasaga on making the School Sport Victoria  Rugby League team for boys 12 years and under. Alex is part of a team of 16 players who will travel to Canberra in August to compete in the School Sport Australia National Championships. Very proud of your selection Alex, Go Team Vic.

Maribyrnong Division Cross Country

In another first this year, we had a group of students compete at the Division Cross Country on Friday 24th May. The course ran along the banks of the Maribyrnong River in Footscray (behind Victoria University). Unfortunately a few of our athletes missed out due to illness, but we are really proud of the group that attended who gave 100% and represented Yarrabing in a fantastic way. Special congratulations go to Jujhar and William who both qualified for the WMR event on Thursday 20th June.

WMR Cross Country

On a cold winter's day (Thursday 20th June) Jujhar and William both represented Yarrabing at the Western Region Cross Country. Unfortunately William had issues getting to the venue on time with a flat tyre making him late, but on a positive note, he ran against the U14 boys and finished 54th. Jujhar was on time and unwell but still showed great spirit on the day and ran the 3 km course with great tenacity. Well done boys.

Sports Report - Soccer (Team A) article written by Nmachi

On the 6th June 2024, Yarrabing Secondary College’s year 7 boys A-team went to their soccer inter-school sports. They had a rather successful run, especially for their first year, winning two out of three of their matches, consequently placing 2nd in their group.

After arriving, they were given a brief discussion about their tactics (long air-passes to the attackers) and their formation.

Soon after, they went to play a match against Southern Cross Grammar, the team that had placed 1st in their group. It was an even match, Yarrabing was able to attack and defend right up until the end of the match, going into penalties. However, this would be their downfall: the boys lost 4-2 on penalties.

Cristvie, one of Yarrabing’s star players, was noticeably sad after the defeat. But he kept his head high going into the next match, which was against Creekside. Yarrabing ultimately won this match 1-0, after a goal from Cristvie. However, Jujhar (Yarrabing’s A-team goalkeeper) had also made tremendous saves in this battle.

The boys went straight into the next battle against Footscray, which was a tremendous victory as they had won 3-0 after a brace from Cristvie and a goal from TJ. They then joined forces with Yarrabing’s boys B-team to play a friendly match against Creekside’s B-team. It was a fun match, Yarrabing coming out 10-2 victorious. This match was a lot of fun: Zavier and Advik (from the B-team) scored a lot of goals, Cristvie scored a hattrick and Nmachi scored a goal and got 2 assists.

Overall, an incredibly fun and valuable experience, but will the A-team win next year?

Year 7 Interschool Sports: Netball B Team article written by Arianna

This year’s Year 7 Interschool sports day was a fantastic event, filled with excitement, energy, and unforgettable moments. Our Girls’ B Team put on a great display of teamwork and encouragement, showcasing the true spirit of our school. Although we didn’t win any games, the experience has left us more determined and prepared to come back stronger next year.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mrs. Taylor and Ashleigh for their dedication and support in taking the teams out. Their guidance and enthusiasm were instrumental in keeping our spirits high throughout the day.

We also want to give special acknowledgment to Gildon, who was new to the game but played like a seasoned pro. Her performance was truly the highlight of the day. Gildon’s incredible ability to intercept passes, her fearless pursuit of the ball, and her unwavering determination were inspiring to everyone. She showed us what it means to never give up, and her efforts did not go unnoticed.

This experience was more than just about the games. It was about building friendships, supporting each other, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Here’s to the B Team – we may not have won this time, but we’ve gained something far more valuable: the spirit of teamwork and the drive to succeed. Until next year, go team!

Girls Badminton 2024 article written by Medha

On 16th May, all the girls in Badminton showed their skills to perform the best they could in singles and doubles. We all had a lot of fun, but sadly lost going into the semi-finals by just 4 points. We all showed our sportsmanship against Footscray High, Brookside and Braybrook A.

The player of the day is : Haniya Fawad for showing sportsmanship.

We all would like to thank Mr Paul for taking us and also would like to thank all the teachers that gave us the courage to play. I would also like to thank all the players: Kashishpreet Kaur Bhullar, Medha Patel, Haniya Fawad, Anureet Kaur and Avkirat Kaur.

Thank you on behalf of the Girls Badminton team 2024.

Year 7 Boys Netball

On Thursday 16th May, our Year 7 boys participated in the Maribyrnong Inter-School Sports Division, marking a day of enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Two teams, each comprising nine students, represented our school with pride and enthusiasm.

Throughout the day, our boys showcased remarkable dedication and positive attitudes. Their ability to support each other, celebrate successes, and learn from challenges was truly commendable. The highlight of the day was when our two teams faced off against each other in a spirited match, demonstrating their skills and camaraderie. William and Karter who were captains of the respective teams chose to sit out of the first half of the match and allocate the positions to the others in the teams. This was an outstanding act of leaderships by both captains.

A special mention goes to Cristvie, Jeramiah, and William, who showed incredible adaptability and determination. These three students quickly learned a new sport and put their newfound skills into action, significantly contributing to their teams' performance and inspiring their peers.

Overall, it was a fantastic day filled with fun and memorable experiences, especially when all the boys were swapping shoes to make sure Cristvie was wearing the shoes with the most tread to ensure he could reach his potential on court. We are immensely proud of all our students for their outstanding representation of the school. We look forward to coming back next year even stronger!

Year 7 Girls Soccer article written by Amna

Interschool girls soccer that took place on the 6th June 2024. We went to Fairbairn Park in Ascot Vale, where many other schools had come. The girls had 3 different matches with 30 minutes per game including a half time after 15 minutes. We may have not won any of the games but all of the girls showed true sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the games. It was great to see that many of the people on our team had never really played soccer, but they still tried their best and that is all that matters. Wesal and Melisa carried the team with their amazing skills while the other players on the team gave it their all. We all had a great time where new friendships were formed and everyone had a great vibe throughout the day.
