English & Literacy

English

Term 2 has been rather eventful for the English Faculty. The college had our very first author visit by Julianne Negri, author of the Year 7 text, The Secret Library of Hummingbird House. Students were enthralled by Julianne’s interactive workshops, with several students having the opportunity to speak with her individually. Julianne had demonstrated how to take inspiration from students’ personal world, and how to combine aspects from different stories. She also ran an activity for students to engage with different senses to ‘set the scene.’ The day was very heartwarming for staff as we observed a very large number of students volunteering to stay back to speak with Julianne.

Year 7 students have delved into the art of rhetoric this term, exploring how various language features may serve as appeals to logos, ethos and pathos. Students have worked rigorously to expand their knowledge, observe how language can be persuasive in different contexts, and learn how to structure claims. Their efforts are in preparation for the exciting oral presentations that students will deliver during Week 3 next term.

Literacy

The college’s mini library has received many donations over the past few weeks from both Melton Libraries, and 123Read2Me – a charity that aims to tackle literacy inequity across Australia and beyond. In order to unwind and relax, students are encouraged to borrow books from the collection, and read over the upcoming holidays.

Melton Libraries contain an extensive catalogue of novels for students to borrow and read – parents and guardians are highly encouraged to register for a membership on behalf of their child.

Students who enjoyed writing their Creative Responses in English this term are implored to participate in the Short Story Competition run by Melton Libraries. More details about this competition can be found on the link below:
