Technology

Craig Day - Curriculum Leader

We cannot believe we are at the end of Semester 1 already! All of our  students have learnt many ideas and concepts which can be applied to outside of school life. Be it cooking or woodwork, every student has had a wonderful start to technology subjects at Yarrabing.

Food Technology

In Food Technology this term, students have been honing the skills they have already learnt in previous classes. We have repeated skills such as rubbing in, creaming and knife skills just to name a few with different recipes and they have added a lot of these recipes to their repertoire.

Students have been introduced to some “different” dishes and different ways of cooking them. They have learnt that adding vegetables to sweet muffins can be rather delicious! The students can now cook tantalising  spinach and ricotta pastries. The aroma of the cocoa biscuits has students and teachers salivating from up the hallways and just recently have crafted a ham (or vegetarian) and cheese ring using a scone dough and most have found them agreeable.

The students can be commended for the way they have tried new things and gone outside their comfort zones this semester.

Wood Technology

In Woodwork, most students have finished their tablet/phone stands and have now started on their final project for the semester. This final project has students making a wooden hobby box that will give them the opportunity to show off their precision cuts and assembly techniques. If time permits the students will be able to paint their finished box.

All of our Woodwork students have learnt about many different tools and used these tools mostly for the first time. They can now identify the difference between a Tenon saw and a Coping saw and can transfer a conceptual 3D drawing into a piece of woodwork they have created and can be proud of. We have some very talented woodworkers at Yarrabing with some only picking up a tool for the first time this year.  We look forward to seeing what they create in the future.
