Topic: “The Silver Donkey celebrates those who are different, those who break the rules, and those who are outsiders.” Discuss.
Sonya Hartnett's historical war fiction novel The Silver Donkey, published in 2004, tells the story of a sick soldier attempting to journey home after deserting during World War I, and the French school children who find him in the woods. Hartnett's text celebrates those who are different, those who are rulebreakers, and those who are outsiders. Due to having polio as a child, Fabrice is rewarded with heroic qualities despite his physical differences. Additionally, Lieutenant Shepard is portrayed somewhat heroically despite breaking significant rules as a deserter. Finally, the Second Tale donkey is illustrated as a courageous figure who unselfishly breaks social norms showing them to be an outsider. Displaying how Hartnett celebrates those who are different, rulebreakers, and outsiders.
