Warami Welcome

This week we hosted Uncle Greg Simms and our Precinct Partners (Western Sydney University, TAFE NSW, Nirimba and St John Paul II Catholic college) in the Warami Welcome event. It was an honour to be welcomed onto the lands of the Darug nation here at Nirimba Fields in a Welcome to Country.

Uncle Greg’s welcome message had two important take-aways:

1. Learn from your wise elders

2. Australia has always been multicultural land when you consider the many Aboriginal nations that existed prior to European settlement - we are better together, and all are welcome. Genuine reconciliation is our pathway forward as a modern multicultural nation.

It was lovely to see our Aboriginal students connecting with other Aboriginal students from across the Nirimba Precinct; having a yarn, enjoying food with native Australian ingredients and participating in cultural activities.

School contributions

The office has sent all families a reminder about the Voluntary School Contribution and Elective Subject Contributions. All these contributions are voluntary, but we ask for contributions so that we can enhance the experiences your child has in their elective HSC courses. Many of our subjects do not have a subject contribution, however the more practical subjects do have a contribution amount to cover the many consumable resources used by students during their classes. The school is funded to deliver base-line curriculum requirements, but at Wyndham we pride ourselves on the high-quality curriculum we deliver and your financial contribution to this much appreciated and supports increased student learning opportunities. Families who are unable to make a subject contribution can apply for financial assistance through the Deputy Principals - Classa and Ann-Maree. Students and families accessing financial assistance are supported in strictest confidence. Please be reassured that all our students are supported to access their chosen curriculum pattern, regardless of their family’s financial situation. And thank you in advance to the families who can support us with contributions, we really appreciate it.

Year 11 Gateway Leaders Program

On Wednesday 19 March, 12 Year 11 students from Wyndham College participated in the UNSW Gateway Leaders Program.

The day began with a leadership workshop run by UNSW Gateway University Ambassadors called “Who am I as a leader?” Students explored individual values, purpose and passions for social impact and explored the kind of leader they want to become.

The second workshop was run by the incredible Jo O’Reilly who asked our students “How do we communicate with purpose?”. Jo is an accomplished professional speaker, former comedian and has worked extensively with UNSW and the AGSM to develop leadership skills and potential in all kinds of people. Jo’s workshop is a practical and inspiring workshop that explored what it means to have a leadership presence that aligns with your values and purpose. Students were reminded that leaders do not always have to have the loudest voice and that we all have leadership potential.

Warami Welcome Lunch

On Wednesday March 26th, Wyndham College hosted our partners in the Nirimba Education Precinct to celebrate our annual Warami Welcome lunch. This event welcomes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff who are new to the precinct. We were privileged to have a Welcome to Country performed by Elder Uncle Greg, who took the opportunity to share some inspirational words. It was a great pleasure to hear about his life and his work as an educator. Thanks also to Marissa Bovino, Kristine MacPhail and Robert Muscat for talking on the day.

Attendees participated in a native themed lunch prepared by the wonderful team at TradeWynds under the supervision of Debra Dunn. Activities were also available including Indigenous games and art. Thank you to all who contributed from Wyndham, including Mel Reilly, Dave Parton, Shannon Finemore, Nathan Hulands, and Sara Imanian for helping with the set up and activities. Thank you also to the representatives from our precinct partners; Marissa Bovino and Jeff Dunn from Western Sydney University, Nereda Illingworth and Evanessa Deguara from TAFE, and Rasha Fitzsimons and Robert Muscat from St John Paul II Catholic College for contributing to the success of the day.

Wyndham Experience Day

On March 18, it was great to host and meet over 330 Year 10 students from 5 different schools. The students were very engaged and enjoyed being at Wyndham. Thanks to the staff who attended from the other schools and also to our very talented HSC teachers for presenting classes selected by students. It was a wonderful Wyndham Experience Day.

Wolverines Sports Academy

Congratulations to the Wolverines on their win this week in the 3rd round of the boys touch football KO.

The 7-5 victory over Castle Hill HS was hard won after a very back and forth game, but it sees the Wolverines through to the Sydney West Top 8 gala day next term.
