Vale Noel Ruddock OAM

Athletics Administrator

The Old Virgilians Association wishes to acknowledge the passing of Noel Ruddock.  To his wife, Margaret, and his children it extends its deepest sympathy.

Noel had a close association with St Virgil’s initially as the Sports Master of the Friends School during the 1950s and 1960s and later through his outstanding contribution to athletics.

He played with the Sandy Bay Football Club in its inaugural game in 1945 and retired in 1960 having played 242 games with the Seagulls.

He was also a decorated athlete and long-serving Athletics Administrator and official.

Ruddock officiated at the 1956 Melbourne and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games – the only Australian to officiate at two home games.

Recognised as an Athletics Australia Life Governor and Athletics Tasmania Life Member, doyen of the Tasmanian Olympic Council and the Australian Commonwealth Games Association and through countless other honours, he was bestowed with membership of the Order of Australia in 1982.
