Week one has started with a bang in the Sports Department. This week we took the Yr 7/8 boys to Pedrina Park for Football on Wednesday, then Thursday the Yr 11/12 girls for NV Netball Championships in Geelong. Today the Yr 9/10 Basketball teams compete in the GD Basketball for the first time

Junior Boys Football

On Wednesday the 20th of July Monivae had 26 very keen Year 7 and 8 Footballers who headed off to Pedrina Park for the Hamilton/Portland Junior Boys Football Carnival. The day consisted of four short games in a round-robin styled format, with each match being 2 x 10-minute halves.

Our first game of the day was against Baimbridge College with the boys starting off with a dominant win of 8 goals 4 behinds to no score. The goal scorers for this game were Matthew Calvert and Jake Ewing with 2 each, as well as Klay Nicholls, Frank Gill, Hayden Phillips, and Ned Hintum all kicking one each. Our second game was against Bayview College where we came out and produced another very strong showing finishing up winners 4 goals 5 to no score. The goal scorers in this game were Matthew Calvert with 2, Riley Malseed and Jake Ewing with one each. Our third game of the day against Hamilton and Alexandra College proved to be our toughest match of the day. The boys really stood up to this challenge and finished up winners, 5 goals 2 to 2 goals 2. The goal scorers for the match were Jensen Moore, Frank Gill, Jobe Dunn, Klay Nicholls, and Jake Ewing all with one each. Our fourth and final match of the day was against Portland Secondary College which proved to be the Grand Final of the day with both teams coming in undefeated. Ultimately the match was hard fought and quite low scoring in the end, with the final score finishing up in our favour once again at 2 goals 4 to no score. We felt that we were certainly well on top for the duration of the match, having the majority of the play throughout, however, Portland really defended quite well to restrict us to only 2 goals. Matthew Calvert and Hunter Van Someren were the goal scorers in this match.

Over the course of the day we had a significant amount of fantastic individual performers, with every single player contributing really well at different stages throughout the four matches. Some better players overall included Hunter Van Someren, who was fantastic throughout the midfield all day and was awarded Monivae’s player of the day. Frank Gill and Matthew Calvert both worked tirelessly in the ruck and as a deep key forward, Klay Nicholls and Hayden Phillips both also played throughout the midfield all day and across half forward, winning plenty of the ball. Xavier White was rock solid in the backline all day and was one of the primary reasons as to why we only conceded two goals across the whole day. Thanks to all who were involved in making this such a successful and enjoyable day.

Senior Year 11/12 NV Netball Championships

On Thursday two senior Netball teams travelled to Geelong to compete in the Vic. Netball School Championships. Both teams played to their best ability and most importantly, had fun. We competed against strong and competitive teams with the navy team falling short by losing one game by just two points, missing out on making it to the next level and the red team finishing 4th overall. I would like to thank Miss Byron and Miss Keath for making the day possible, and to Belinda and Nyah for coming along to support both teams.
