PREP

Our Prep students have had a wonderful start to the term, settling into routines and building confidence in their learning. It has been fantastic to see their growing independence and enthusiasm across all areas of the classroom.

In Science, students have been exploring the parts of a plant. They have been learning to identify and name key parts such as roots, stems, leaves, and flowers, and are beginning to understand how each part helps the plant grow and survive. This hands-on learning has sparked lots of curiosity and great discussions.

We have also had our first session of SMP with our Grade 6 buddies. This was an exciting experience for our students, who enjoyed getting to know their buddies and working together. The Grade 6 students did a wonderful job supporting and guiding the Foundation students, helping to build positive relationships across the school.

We look forward to continuing to build on these experiences throughout the term

The Prep Team

Year 1

Over the past few weeks in Grade 1, we have been learning about our school, Brookside P–9 College, and how it has changed over time.

Students have explored what our school looked like in the past compared to today, identifying similarities and differences and discussing how our school community has grown.

In Mathematics, we have been focusing on patterns. Students have been creating their own patterns and practising how to continue and describe them.

In Reading, we have continued developing our understanding of letter sounds and digraphs (when two letters work together to make one sound).

It has been wonderful to see students settle back in so positively. We have been having lots of fun learning together and are excited for what the rest of the term has in store!

Year 2

Welcome back, Grade 2 students and families. We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday. It has been wonderful to see everyone return to school settled, positive, and ready to learn.

In Literacy, students are developing their understanding of simple and compound sentences. They are learning to identify, complete, and edit sentences with uppercase and lowercase letters and correct punctuation. As part of our text study, The World’s Most Pointless Animals, students are exploring the key features of information texts, including titles, labelled diagrams, contents pages, and index pages. They are also practising how to identify facts and use sentence starters in their writing.

In Mathematics, we are focusing on fractions. Students are learning to divide different shapes and strips into equal parts such as halves, quarters, and eighths. They are building an understanding that equal parts must be fair, even, and equal.

In Humanities, students are learning about ANZAC Day and why it is important in Australia. They are also learning about special days like Australia Day and Harmony Day. They are beginning to understand why these days are important and the difference between celebrations and commemorations.

We are very pleased with the positive start our students have made this term and look forward to an engaging learning journey ahead.

Warm regards,

Yr 2 Team
