Year 3 Term 1 Learning Snap shot

Welcome to our Year 3 Newsletter!

We’re so excited to share what our students have been learning and exploring in the classroom over the last five weeks. Here you’ll find snapshots of their wonderful work, new acquired skills and exciting learning experiences happening each week. We hope you enjoy reading about the learning journey and celebrating the growth of our students at Aitken Hill Primary School.

Reading

In Reading students are making predictions before and during reading, and practising reading accurately and fluently by re-reading and self-correcting. We are also exploring how verbs change through different tenses and strengthening comprehension by asking thoughtful questions and visualising to create clear pictures in our minds.

Writing

In Writing, students are exploring both persuasive and narrative genres. When writing persuasively, they are learning how to clearly express an opinion and support it with their reasons. In narrative writing, students are developing engaging characters, settings and story problems, while using descriptive language to bring their ideas to life. Students are also focusing on correct sentence structure, punctuation and editing to strengthen their writing.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we are learning about measurement, statistics and place value. Students are measuring length, mass and capacity using appropriate units, and collecting and representing data through simple graphs and charts. We are also strengthening our understanding of place value, recognising the value of digits in three- and four-digit numbers, and using this knowledge to support addition and subtraction strategies. These skills help build strong mathematical understanding and problem-solving confidence.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, our unit explores why sport and physical activity are important for our health and wellbeing. Students are learning how active participation in physical activity supports our physical, mental and social health. We are discussing teamwork, resilience, fair play and how being active helps us feel positive and connected to others. Through class discussions and activities, students are developing a deeper understanding of how healthy habits contribute to a balanced lifestyle.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

In SEL, students are learning to recognise and understand their emotions and how to respond to them in positive ways. We are exploring personal and cultural strengths, helping students appreciate what makes themselves and others unique. Our focus also includes caring for ourselves, each other, our school and our learning.
