Grade 5 February Newsletter
Dear Parents and Families,
This month has been both busy and rewarding for our Grade 5 students. Alongside their regular classroom learning, students took part in a Police incursion and a Life Education session, both of which provided valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom. They also prepared for NAPLAN, approaching the assessments with determination and a commendable level of maturity.
Thank you for your continued support during this eventful month.
Please see below for a summary of the learning that has taken place across each subject area.
Reading
In Reading, students have been learning to form and justify opinions about characters in the texts we have read. They have explored how base words, prefixes and suffixes help to build vocabulary and practised important comprehension strategies such as predicting and making connections to their own experiences and other texts.
Writing
In Writing, students have been developing their skills in both narrative and persuasive writing. In narrative writing, they focused on creating engaging story openings, developing characters, building tension and using descriptive language. In persuasive writing, students learnt how to express clear opinions, support their ideas with reasons and evidence and use persuasive language to influence their audience. Throughout both genres, students have been working on planning, drafting, editing, and improving their work.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of place value, decimal numbers and measurement. They have practised reading, writing and comparing large and small numbers, working with decimals and applying their knowledge to real-life measurement tasks involving length.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been exploring Business and Economics concepts, including wants and needs, surplus and deficit and imports and exports. Through real-world examples and classroom activities, they have developed an understanding of how goods and services are produced, traded and managed, and how these decisions impact individuals and communities.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been learning strategies to manage strong emotions and develop positive coping skills. They have begun lessons from The Resilience Project, focusing on gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. These lessons support students’ wellbeing and help them build resilience, positive relationships and emotional awareness.
