Principal's February Report

We at Aitken Hill Primary School recognise the rich Aboriginal heritage within our community and acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, which includes the existing family members of the Gunung-Willam-Balluk clan, as the Traditional Custodians of this land. We embrace Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander living cultures as a vital part of Australia’s identity and recognise, celebrate and pay respect to Elders past, present and future.
Welcome to our first monthly newsletter for 2026. This newsletter will be posted on Compass monthly and will include a community report from each community and specialist classes about what the students are learning. The newsletter will also include updates from the Administration team and our Leaders.
We have had a great start to 2026, we are really impressed with how well the students have settled into their learning. It's great that we've had such a high attendance rate and seeing students in their classrooms at 8:50am ready for learning is pleasing. It's also great to see so many students being SunSmart and wearing their hats when they are outside. Thank you all for your support!
One Community, Smiling and Succeeding Together!
Our Focus in 2026
Our main focus in 2026 will continue to be on Reading and Student Wellbeing.
Our Annual Implementation Plan goals for 2026 are:
4 Year Strategic Plan: Goal 1: Maximise the learning growth of every student in literacy and numeracy.
In Term 1 we will focus on improving our teaching of Reading by ensuring we have clear learning intentions and success criteria for each lesson for our students.
4 Year Strategic Plan: Goal 2: Optimise the wellbeing of every student.
In Term 1 we will focus on supporting students to self-regulate and more appropriate choices independently.
This year we also continue our partnership with the Resilience Projectin order to build our students Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM), along with their Emotional Literacy, Connection and Physical Health.
We will continue to build our staff's capacity to implement the Mental Health in Primary Schools program and the implementation of the Department of Education's approach to Disability and Inclusion.
We will also continue to focus on improving our student attendance. It's vital that children attend school every day for a full day. It's important that our students arrive at school on time every day, they should be in their classrooms when the music is on and getting ready for the day so that when the bell goes learning can start.
GOLDEN SUN MOTH
Our school logo is based on the golden sun moth.
The golden sun moth is an endangered moth that lives in our local area. On Waterview Boulevard, at Aitken Creek, there is a protected reserve for the golden sun moth. There are fence posts surrounding the reserve.
Our year level communities are named after moths and butterflies.
